Cody Gakpo returns to Liverpool training in welcome boost for Jurgen Klopp ahead of Merseyside derby… with forward having been out with a knee injury since controversial 2-1 defeat at Tottenham last month

Cody Gakpo returned to training with the Liverpool squad on Thursday in a welcome boost for Jurgen Klopp Ahead of this weekend’s Merseyside derby.

The in-form forward missed the last two matches and was absent from the Netherlands’ international break after sustaining a knee injury against Tottenham on September 30.

He has found the net in three of his last four games for the Reds but was hauled off at half-time in the controversial 2-1 loss to Spurs, having equalised just before the break.

The 24-year-old could be in contention for Saturday’s Anfield showdown against Everton and was involved in ball work at Liverpool’s AXA training complex.

After failing to score in his first six outings for the club last season, Gakpo has developed into a trusted player for Klopp and has had joy in a central role.

Argentina’s Alexis Mac Allister, Uruguay’s Darwin Nunez, Colombia’s Luis Diaz and Brazilian Alisson Becker all trained on Thursday as well.

All four had featured for their respective countries in the South American World Cup qualifiers less than 36 hours earlier.

Liverpool look revitalised after a summer transfer window shake-up and until Spurs intervened they were unbeaten since April 1.

They pose a fearsome challenge for Everton, who languish 16th in the table.

However, Sean Dyche’s Toffees have won two of their last three and have benefitted from the return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Kick-off between Liverpool and Everton is at 12.30 on Saturday.
