Haaland is superhuman and Brighton’s ultimate wonderkid – things we learned on Saturday

It was goals, goals, goals in the Premier League as fans enjoyed a footballing feast on Saturday.

No less than (23) goals were scored across the six matches with dominant displays for some of the league’s biggest clubs, and a poor defeat for the division’s biggest spenders.

A 2-2 draw between Sheffield United and Everton got the day started, before Tottenham’s 5-2 win over Burnley and Manchester City’s 5-1 win over Fulham stole the headlines.

David Brooks got himself on the scoresheet for the first time since being given the all-clear from cancer in a 2-2 draw between Brentford and Bournemouth, while Anthony Elanga secured a shock win for Nottingham Forest against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

In the late kick-off, Evan Ferguson inspired Brighton to a hugely impressive 3-1 victory over Newcastle.

With a two-week international break next up, there’s plenty for fans and managers to be pondering – here’s what talkSPORT.com learned from the day’s action.

Money can’t buy Chelsea goals

The Blues may have spent more than £1billion since Todd Boehly’s takeover last summer, but Chelsea still can’t buy a goal.

Raheem Sterling, Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson have all joined the club during the Boehly regime, with all three looking bright this term but none of the trio had what it took to carve Forest open.

They even brought brought Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke and their deadline day signing, Cole Palmer, off the bench against Steve Cooper’s side to no avail.

Chelsea had 21 shots during the clash at Stamford Bridge, but with just two of those efforts being on target, it’s clear that a lack of potency could be an issue for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Compared with Forest’s seven efforts and 24 per cent possession which led to Anthony Elanga’s winner, Chelsea’s fans will be very frustrated to come away from a very winnable game with nothing.

While many of their stars will be away on international duty in the coming weeks, Pochettino’s task will now be to transform their individual attacking talent into a cohesive unit who crucially, put the ball in the back of the net.

Tottenham don’t need Harry Kane

While Chelsea can’t find the back of the net, the same can’t be said for Spurs who are scoring goals for fun.

Tottenham last their record goalscorer Harry Kane to Bayern Munich over the summer with all and sundry pondering how on earth the north London side would replace his pretty consistent 30-odd goals every season.

They needn’t have worried.

Ange Postecoglou’s attacking set-up has seen Tottenham look like a different beast going forward, with Spurs bagging five against Burnley at Turf Moor.

A hat-trick for Heung-min Son and another effort for signing of the summer contender James Maddison secured another three points for the Lilywhites who will go into the international break in second spot.

Not only that, but Tottenham have 11 Premier League goals so far this season – the joint-most of any side in the division, tied with current treble-winners Manchester City.

Erling Haaland is still superhuman

There’s just no stopping the Premier League’s most lethal finisher.

Haaland’s first season at Manchester City saw him defy the already high expectations held for him, scoring a staggering 52 times in all competitions.

If anyone thought that it was a fluke, they were sadly mistaken.

The Norwegian attacker found the net three times during the 5-1 victory over Fulham at the Etihad Stadium, taking his tally for the season to six in just four games.

With Pep Guardiola’s sitting at the top of the table and with the Champions League group stage just around the corner, the 23-year-old will be eyeing another impressive campaign.

Can he surpass last season’s tally of 52? It’ll be a huge challenge but based on his start to the season, anything is possible for a player who has the goalscoring record books in the palm of his hands.

A new goalscoring sensation

The Premier League has had some legendary names at the top of the scoring charts over the years, but a new name could be emerging on that list.

Evan Ferguson isn’t a completely new name to English football after breaking onto the scene with Brighton last term, however we’re now seeing that he truly is the real deal.

The teenager started the Premier League clash with Newcastle and made his presence felt by scoring a hat-trick – an achievement that put him on a list with Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Chris Bart-Williams as the only players to score three goals in the top flight at the age of 18.

Despite his tender age, Ferguson has now scored 18 goals in 39 appearances for the Seagulls – a strike rate of almost one goal every two games.

Given Brighton’s track record of selling their young stars, such as Moises Caicedo, for top dollar, it won’t be long until the striker starts attracting interest from the world’s biggest clubs, but according to Jamie Redknapp it’s crucial that his development is the top priority.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “This is the time to be really smart about his future.

“Whoever is representing him or looking after him, you have to think about what is the best thing for his future because right now there’s nowhere better.

“He’s working with an unbelievable coach, good players and he’s learning the game inside-out.

“There’s not many coaches – maybe only Pep Guardiola – who play that style of football.

“He’s at the right place and there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that he’s going to go on to achieve great things but he can do it here for the foreseeable future.

“When the right time comes he can go wherever he wants because he possesses a bit of Shearer, a bit of Kane and a bit of Rooney – he’s got everything in his locker, magnificent.”
