Bayern will ‘look stupid’ if they don’t land Kane from Tottenham as third bid rejected

Bayern Munich have been told to be ‘really careful’ when it comes to their pursuit of Harry Kane.

talkSPORT understands Bayern Munich have had another bid for Tottenham’s Harry Kane rejected having tabled an £85million offer.

Kane is not actively trying to force a move away from his boyhood club this summer, and the Spurs hierarchy are ‘relaxed’ about Kane’s future.

Now, though, Bayern have been warned of looking ‘stupid’ should they be unable to persuade Kane to come to Munich, considering their usual transfer activity.

That’s the opinion of talkSPORT’s European football expert Andy Brassell, who joined Hawksbee and Jacobs on Monday to discuss the Tottenham striker’s future.

And Brassell made a point of noting just how out of the ordinary Bayern’s stance on Kane has been this summer, as well as how this may play a role in the outcome of their pursuit.

“There’s no real amount of money that makes it worth it for Spurs. He’s a youth product,” he said.

“If he walks, he walks. I think there’s a real limit to what Bayern will pay here.

“There’s a lot of dispute in Germany, and a lot of debate in Germany, over whether they should be going out there and spending the thick end of €100m, or maybe more.”

He continued: “That already seems a lot. That would be a record fee for Bayern. He’s the England captain for goodness sake, he’s a legend in the game. But he’s heading into his 30s, he’s got a lot of miles on the clock.

“There’s no question he’d be a huge upgrade for Bayern, he would make an instant impact. But when you look at the fee, the wages, there’s a lot of dispute in Germany [because] Bayern have spent over €40m (£34m) on a player three times in their history.

“So Bayern are used to paying small-ish transfer fees and large wages, so this is a huge departure. To get one of the huge stars of the Premier League, obviously it would be a huge boost for the Bundesliga.

“It would remove a lot of the uncertainty that was at Bayern because one of the issues with Robert Lewandowski going wasn’t so much the goals, but it created an imbalance in the dressing room.

“When Lewandowski is the top dog, there’s no discussion. He plays every game, very much like Harry Kane, everyone knows who the no.9 is. Where as if you’ve got all these world class forwards competing to be the top dog, it’s just a mess. It’s really difficult to manage.”

Reports this last week suggested Bayern’s third bid was a ‘take it or leave it’ offer. However, Brassell doesn’t see it as straightforward as that.

“Now they’ve gone in for him, and gone in for him quite hard, they’ll look a bit stupid if they don’t get him. I think that’s really, really important,” he said.

“Whereas there’s normally a line in which Bayern are not prepared to pay, I think the line’s a little bit blurred here. It’s a difficult transfer to read because there’s a lot of face to be lost on all sides here.

“For Bayern, for Kane, for Tottenham. How they deal with it over the next week or two I think is fascinating.”

Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic is one alternative striker Bayern have been linked with, with the Bundesliga side exploring their options knowing signing Kane wouldn’t be a simple process.

The England captain has just one year left on his current deal with the club he’s been at since 2004.

But Brassell believes Bayern must strike now before he’s a free agent, and not wait around for competitors to swoop in.

“That’s why it’s so big for Bayern,” Brassell continued. “When there are other competitors who can really make a decent offer, and they can all make a decent offer when he’s on a free, Bayern haven’t got a clear field anymore.

“That’s the thing. So they’ve got to be really careful here, they’ve got to get this right.”
