Could a World Cup trophy be goal-scorer Georgia’s next tattoo? The Lionesses ace claims her inkings are ‘random’ – but not all are without meaning…

  •  Georgia Stanway tattoos include a ghost, balloon and a heart
  •  The 24-year-old also has ‘lots and lots like jellytots’ tattooed on her body

From a jellyfish to a dinosaur, stick-man and ice-cream cone, yesterday’s penalty-scorer Georgia Stanway is adorned with a range of curious tattoos.

Stanway said she has ‘loads of random tattoos’, with an array of doodles dotting her left arm –including a ghost, balloon, heart and the words ‘lots and lots like jellytots’.

Her back is also inked with tattoos such as a game of noughts and crosses and a Love Heart sweet.

But it seems not all are without meaning – the footballer, 24, also has ‘209’ on her right bicep, a reference to her FA legacy number, given to her as she was the 209th player to represent the England women’s team.

Stanway admitted England were ‘relieved’ to get over the line after they were given a scare by minnows Haiti in their World Cup opener.

Georgia Stanway was relieved that England secured their narrow opening win against Haiti

She scored the Lionesses only goal in their 1-0 victory in Brisbane, with the midfielder eventually converting from the penalty spot after a retake.

England had been heavy favourites going into yesterday’s game, with Haiti ranked 49 places below the European champions.

But boss Sarina Wiegman had highlighted their unpredictability before kick-off and Stanway admitted England had been caught off guard by the World Cup debutants.

‘It’s been a long build-up to today and we’re kind of happy to just get over the line,’ Stanway said.

‘They caused us problems, were a threat on the counter-attack, were fast, physical and they challenged us in areas that we probably didn’t expect.

‘Haiti are new to this tournament so we kind of didn’t really know what to expect. Credit to them, they put up a good fight and I think they will cause problems in our group.

‘Sometimes you can’t compete with pace – you’re born with it or you’re not. I’m not and have to make up for it in different ways but they troubled us in those areas so that’s something we’ll review coming into the next game.’
