Borussia Dortmund have cleared the issue of German national team midfielder Emré Can’s future with the club by signing the 29-year-old to a two-year contract-extension. The reported upon deal will keep the 79-times-capped international in black-and-yellow through 2026. Can’s previous working papers would have expired at the end of next season.

“Emre has developed in the past season into the leader we have always seen in him,” BVB sporting director Sebastian Kehl noted in a club statement,  “We appreciate his drive, physicality and his unshakable will to win every game. Emre is a strong, mature personality and has great international experience. He will help us to further develop and stabilize this team.”

“I feel very comfortable here in Dortmund,” the player himself added, “In the past few months, I’ve definitely arrived and shown what I expect of myself and what the fans here expect of me. It must be my own personal standard to play like I did in the second half of the season or even better. Dortmund and I are a good fit. That’s why I want to stay here, work hard and help the team achieve our goals.”

Can became the linchpin of BVB trainer Edin Terzic’s 4-1-4-1 during the club’s firebrand “Rück-runde” that nearly saw them take the Bundesliga title. The Frankfurt-native also played his way back into Bundestrainer Hansi Flick’s German national team, earning his first caps since 2021.
