Bernardo Silva, Thibaut Courtois and David de Gea… inside nine of football’s most lavish weddings

The end of the football season means the start of the Wedding season, with some of the biggest names in the game tying the knot with their partners this summer.

Players such as Bernardo Silva, Thibaut Courtois and Lautaro Martinez have enjoyed lavish weddings surrounded by stunning scenery – certainly spending thousands of pounds to celebrate what should be the biggest day of their lives.

As expected with how much players earn in the game, everything is done to a much grander scale from the bride’s wedding dress to the location of their special day.

There is also a great interest in who attends the ceremony or celebration from team mate’s at club or international level, and even some celebrities outside the world of sport.

Mail Sport takes an inside look at some of the most lavish football weddings this summer.

Bernardo Silva

The Manchester City midfielder tied the knot with model Ines Tomaz in front of 250 guests including a host of team mates earlier this month.

Both the ceremony and celebration took place at a hilltop hotel and winery on a 120-hectare vineyard estate in the Douro Valley – an hour and a half’s drive inland from the city of Porto.

The treble-winner opted for a suit by Lisbon-based tailors Rosa and Teixeira, while his singer sister Maria Carvalho e Silva, performed at the celebration with Bernardo briefly joining her on stage and surprising guests with an ably-performed duo.

Silva has been together with his wife since 2020 and they are currently expecting their first child.

The 28-year-old, along with his Man City team mates posted photos from the wedding, which had a stunning scenic backdrop containing sprawling hills and the winding Douro River below them.

Famous guests: Riyad Mahrez, Kyle Walker, Ruben Dias, Joao Cancelo, Joao Felix

David de Gea

De Gea’s wedding came in the aftermath of officially becoming a free agent as Manchester United U-turned on a contract previously offered.

Though it’s unsure where his future lies, the Spanish keeper didn’t let the disappointment of being released by United faze him.

He tied the knot with singer, TV presenter and actress Edurne Garcia, 37, at a ceremony which was held in Menorca.

The couple were all smiles as they posed on the special occasion which came after they also enjoyed a pre-wedding celebration on the Balearic Island. De Gea then shared photos on his Instagram with his wife, with the caption: ‘We couldn’t be happier’.

His former club meanwhile were slammed over their ‘tone deaf’ comments when they congratulated the Spaniard just days after his contract expired at Old Trafford.

Wilfried Zaha

Zaha married long-term partner Paige Bannister this month after the pair were engaged on Valentine’s Day last year.

The new wife of the 30-year-old Crystal Palace legend posted stunning black and white pictures from the wedding on Instagram, including photos of them cutting the cake, together outside the venue and during the celebrations. The pair have not revealed the location of where there wedding took place.

In attendance was said to be a host of former team mates as well as Zaha’s new partner at Croydon Athletic, Stormzy – who also posted a picture of them cutting the cake.

The new wife captioned her post on Instagram: “MR AND MRS ZAHA,” along with a ring emoji.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

De Gea was not the only Spanish keeper to be married this summer as Chelsea star Kepa tied the knot with former Miss Universe Spain Andrea Martinez.

The pair got engaged last September after seven months of dating, with their wedding last month taking place at a picturesque location in Marbella.

A host of Chelsea team mates past and present attended the ceremony, including two that have left the club this summer in Mateo Kovacic and Kai Havertz.

Arsenal star Jorginho posted a video of Kepa dancing with Martinez outside the venue as they celebrated their special day.

Chelsea fans were not pleased after it appeared that Havertz appeared to confirm his £65m move to Arsenal while in Marbella for Kepa’s wedding.

As part of the announcement, the Gunners social team produced a number of pictures and videos of Havertz in their kit, including a video that showcased the forward receiving an Arsenal top.

However, after it was posted online, Chelsea fans were quick to suggest that it had been filmed while Havertz was attending Kepa’s wedding – due to the backdrop of Arsenal’s social media posts.

Thibaut Courtois

The Real Madrid goalkeeper and Israeli model Mishel Gerzig  got married last month in the French town of Cannes.

Their wedding took place at the Chateau De La Croix Des Gardes, in the heart of the French Riviera. The venue has 16 guest bedrooms and even a helicopter landing pad.

The property became famous in the 1950s for being the setting of the Alfred Hitchcock movie ‘To Catch a Thief’ starring Grace Kelly.

Guests were given white trainers bearing the couple’s names and date of the wedding, and were also welcome with glasses of champagne which also bore the name of the newlyweds.

Ahead of the big day, guests were treated to a welcoming party at a private beach.

The wedding took place in the aftermath of captaincy drama within the Belgian national team.

Courtois reportedly failed to arrive for Belgium duty after Romelu Lukaku was named captain ahead of him for their draw with Austria.

Famous guests: Martin Garrix and past and present team mates

Ben White

The Arsenal defender married model Milly Adams in May of this year, with the pair taking to Instagram to share a series of images from their special day.

Adams decided to shun a traditional wedding dress for a waistcoat and trousers at the ceremony which took place at the Old Marylebone Town Hall in London.

The most expensive room at the venue can cost up to £966 in the week, up to £1,151 at the weekend and £1,241 on a bank holiday – which includes the use of a room, the attendance of two registrars and a copy of the marriage certificate.

Even with additional costs for the celebrations this will likely be a significant way down on what the likes of Silva and Courtois paid for their respective weddings.

White opted for a double breasted suit blazer and a waistcoat which had ‘Mr and Mrs White’ embroidered onto the pocket.

The couple got engaged last year after a whirlwind five month romance. They  celebrated their honeymoon with a trip to Ibiza last month.

Lautaro Martinez

The Inter Milan striker got married in a lavish ceremony in northern Italy to Agustina Gandolfo in May – wowing guests against the stunning backdrop of Lake Como.

Martinez posted a number of photos on his Instagram account, with the caption: ‘Our dream civil wedding. Thanks to everyone who accompanied us, travelled many kilometers and effort to be close to us on this special day.

‘The big wedding is coming soon to continue celebrating in our country. Agostina Gandolfo I choose you and love you forever.’

Initially decked out in a suit, Martinez welcomed guests at an outdoor reception, with the striker and Gandolfo then saying their vows on a picturesque altar.

The 25-year-old swapped his shirt and tie for a white t-shirt as the wedding party moved indoors to continue the celebrations.

Martinez shared multiple pictures of the evening on Instagram, including the newly-weds cutting into their cake.

Lionel Messi missed the wedding though as he was too busy at a Coldplay concert.

Famous guests included: Enzo Fernandez, Emiliano Martinez, Alexis Mac Allister, Romelu Lukaku, Megan Thee Stallion

Andre Gray

The former Watford striker married Little Mix singer Leigh-Anne Pinnock in Jamaica last month.

They are understood to have exchanged vows in front of a select group of close friends and family members, among them Pinnock’s bandmate Jade Thirlwall.

After marrying in a low-key ceremony the pair rounded off idyllic ceremony with a beachside party, during which a special song written especially for the couple was performed.

The wedding itself was a hugely private affair and kept out of the spotlight with no pictures of the pair from the wedding.

As per the Mirror, Pinnock said about the wedding: ‘Andre and I had the most incredible wedding surrounded by love in a place that’s so special to both of us. Thank you all for showing us so much love & support.’

Bradley Dack

Dack also had a celebrity wedding as he married Olivia Attwood – of The Only Way is Essex fame.

They got married in London at the five star Bulgari hotel with Attwood wearing a £30,000 wedding dress.

She shared a lot of insight into the big day on Instagram, revealing extravagant details such as having 25,000 flowers, a ten tier cake and a celebrity tattooist.

The wedding was also filmed for her show Olivia Meets Her Match – though she has decided to keep parts of the day hidden as a surprise for viewers when the programme airs.

Photos taken on the big day show the newlyweds getting the phrase ‘Till Death Do Us Part’ inked on their arms by top tattoo artist Pablo.

Attwood had the words ‘Till Death’ inked on her arm while former Blackburn star Dack had ‘Do Us Part’ on his.

Famous guests: Georgia Harrison and Amber Davies from 2017’s Love Island, and former TOWIE stars Nicole Bass and Fran Parman.
