In the 1000th international match for the German national team, Hansi Flick’s men take on Ukraine in a charity friendly at Bremen’s Weserstadion on Monday night.
Kevin Trapp will make a rare start in goal and will play behind a three-man defense, as the Germany coach revealed when announcing his squad.
“We want to put our opponents under pressure with a lot of offensive power from the strikers and at the same time be defensively compact with a three-man backline. We are very well positioned with the squad we have selected,” Flick said.
Flick will be without Manchester City’s Ilkay Gündogan and Inter’s Robin Gosens, who will arrive later in the camp after playing in the Champions League final on Saturday.
Timo Werner will also miss out due to the injury he picked up in the DFB-Pokal final.
“Ilkay and Robin Gosens will both arrive on June 14. We’re looking at Timo’s situation from day to day – he’s getting better, but we have to assess it on a daily basis,” said Flick at a press conference yesterday, where he also confirmed that Niclas Füllkrug will start up front.
“Niclas will start tomorrow’s game if everything goes according to plan. He’s a player who does a lot of good for the team and pushes them forward. We haven’t talked about what might happen in the future.”
