Paul Scholes rolls back years with goal before going off injured at Soccer Aid

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes scored another long-range stunner to add to his collection of Old Trafford strikes.

On as a second half substitute, the 48-year-old fired England into the lead at Soccer Aid in the 53rd minute.

But he soon went off after picking up an injury

The ex-England international latched onto the ball after UFC champion Leon Edwards – in goal for the World XI – parried it away.

It was a position that Scholes thrived in before he called time on his playing days in 2013.

Rolling back the years, Scholes hit the ball first time into the bottom right corner to leave Edwards no chance.

His strike came just three minutes after actor Asa Butterfield had equalised for England after Edwards was wrong-footed by his goal-bound cross.

Social media was sent into meltdown over his goal, as one Twitter user said: “Scholes. He has still got it.”

This United supporter posted: “Scholes would still start for us.”

A third quipped: “Erik ten Hag should sign Paul Scholes.”

Meanwhile this fan simply stated: “Vintage Scholes goal, love to see it.”

Scholes required medical attention just minutes after scoring

But Scholes’ elation soon turned to misery as he limped off shortly later after receiving medical treatment.

The 11-time Premier League winner fell awkwardly on the floor and was unable to continue.

And his absence was felt by his teammates, as Robbie Keane fired in a quickfire double to restore the World XI’s lead.

His team had opened the scoring early on after Usain Bolt threaded the ball through David James’ legs.

Kem Cetinay then scored a fourth as he added to his collection of Soccer Aid goals.
