He says the great thing about Test Rugby, which is also the most difficult, is the demands placed on players at this level. With a smile, he tells the story of the game against France at Murrayfield two weeks ago.

“We slowly walked out of the gate, he recalls. For 40 minutes it’s terrible. But we come back and win the game. Based on the fact that the guy who had a zero in season 13, we won! Can we relax? Gregor and everyone else. This is the great thing about Test Rugby. It is ruthless. No excuses, especially at the World Cup. You don’t release the brake pedal.”

Saturday in St. Etienne brought defeat, but in many ways it was a better performance than the previous victory. First, it was against a stronger France away from home.
