Is It Safe To Travel To The Middle East Right Now? Latest UK, US Advisories

After five Gaza wars, this one has unfortunately proven to be the most destructive for both sides. The fighting began on October 7. More than 4,000 lives have sadly been lost. according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, 9,700 Palestinians have been injured and 2,750 have died. Israel reports that more than 1,400 people have died on the Israeli side and that at least 199 others — including children — have been captured by Hamas and taken to Gaza.

Is It safe to travel to Israel?

UK Travel Advisory

The FCDO advises against visiting Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories unless absolutely necessary, as well as the following places:

  • Gaza
  • Areas situated within a 4km radius of the Lebanese border have been declared as closed military zones by the Israeli military, and entry into these zones is strictly prohibited.
  • The Sheba’a Farms and Ghajjar regions: a. Areas within 500m of the Lebanese border, referred to as the ‘Blue Line,’ to the east of Metula, including the northern edge of the town. b. Areas within 500m of the Syrian border, known as the ‘Alpha Line.’
  • Regions in close proximity to the Gaza border, encompassing: a. Southwestern areas of Ashkelon b. Areas to the south of route 35 and to the west of route 40, extending up to Tlalim (excluding Be’er Sheva) c. Western areas of Be’er Sheva d. Northern regions situated to the north of route 211

U.S. Travel Advisory

Terrorist organizations, lone terrorists and other violent extremists are still preparing for possible attacks in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel. Terrorists and violent extremists could carry out attacks on tourist destinations, transportation hubs, marketplaces and shopping centers, and local government buildings without much notice. Violence could erupt at any time in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Israel has seen a significant increase in the number of protests, some of which have been sudden and unannounced.

Reconsider Travel To:

  • Think twice before visiting Israel because of terrorism and civil unrest.
  • West Bank also because of terrorism and civil unrest

Is it safe to travel to Lebanon?

UK. Travel Advisory

The FCDO continues to advise against Travel to certain areas of Lebanon, such as those south of the Litani River, and warns against visiting the rest of the country unless absolutely necessary.

U.S. Travel Advisory

Lebanon – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Reconsider travel to Lebanon due to crime, terrorism, armed conflict, civil unrest, kidnapping and Embassy Beirut’s limited capacity to provide support to U.S. citizens. 

Do Not Travel to:

  • The border with Syria because of armed conflict and terrorism 
  • The border with Israel because of the possibility of hostilities 
  • Settlements for refugees because of the possibility of armed conflict

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

UK. Travel Advisory

With the exception of the village of El Salloum, where all travel is discouraged unless absolutely necessary, the FCDO warns against all travel within 20 kilometers of the Egyptian-Libyan border.

Suggested:

All but essential travel is discouraged by FCDO to:

  • The eastern part of Ismailiyah Governorate
  • Western Desert
  • Hala’ib Triangle and Bir Tawil Trapezoid

U.S. Travel Advisory

Egypt – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Because the Embassy has limited ability to assist arrested or detained citizens with dual citizenship of the United States and Egypt, you should be especially careful in Egypt.

Do not travel to:

  • The Sinai Peninsula (except for air travel to Sharm El-Sheikh) is discouraged due to terrorism concerns.
  • Travel in the Western Desert is not advisable due to the presence of terrorism.
  • Egyptian border regions should be avoided due to the existence of military zones.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

UK Travel Advisory

Border with Syria: The FCDO recommends avoiding any travel within ten kilometers of the Syrian border.

Sirnak (city): FCDO advises against visiting Sirnak unless absolutely necessary.

Hakkari province: The FCDO advises against visiting the province of Hakkari unless absolutely necessary.

U.S. Travel Advisory

Turkey – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Because of terrorism and arbitrary arrests, you should be especially careful when traveling to Turkey. There is an increased risk in some places.

Do Not Travel To:

  • Because of terrorism, the provinces of Sirnak and Hakkari and all regions within 10 km (six miles) of the Syrian border are affected.

Is it safe to travel to Jordan?

UK. Travel Advisory

The FCDO warns against traveling within three kilometers of the Jordanian border with Syria unless absolutely necessary. Due to the precarious situation in southern Syria, security risks such as instability or terrorist activity may occur at any time.

U.S. Travel Advisory

Jordan – Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution

Due to terrorism, you should be especially careful in Jordan. There is a higher risk in certain places.

Do not travel to:

  • Areas within a 3.5 km radius of the Jordanian border adjoining Syria, specifically east of Ruwayshid town towards the border with Iraq, are to be avoided due to the presence of terrorism and ongoing armed conflict.
  • Steer clear of designated Syrian refugee camps in Jordan, primarily due to entry restrictions enforced by the Government of Jordan.
  • Exercise caution in Zarqa, Rusayfah, and the Baqa’a neighborhood of Ayn Basha due to heightened concerns related to terrorism and criminal activities.

Reconsider travel to:

  • Ma’an City and certain regions of Ma’an Governorate due to terrorists and criminal activity.
