Two people, including a British national, were killed Tuesday and nine were seriously injured when a bus in Montenegro plunged off a ravine.

Local police said at about 12.10pm local time that a bus operated by Papović Bus tumbled off the main road and down a 20m-deep cliff.

The coach carrying 30 passengers rammed into a roadside barrier in Obzovica, in the mountainous region of Cetinje, for some 15m before breaking through.

One passenger told the state RTCG radio: ‘I was listening to music and all was normal. Then all of sudden there were screams and the sound of glass breaking.’

The force confirmed at 2pm on X, formerly known as Twitter, that two people died at the scene.

Montenegrin newspaper DAN reported that they included a British man identified by the initials AND, 66, and 19-year-old AB from the Montenegrin capital Podgorica.

LB, 29, from Ukraine, SK, 20, from Podgorica, NO, 25, from Tivat and 72-year-old LDK suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the orthopaedic ward of a local hospital.

AS, 33, also from Ukraine, remains in the intensive care unit while JTK, a British national, has been placed in the emergency department at the Clinical Center of Montenegro.

At least 16 other passengers including tourists suffered minor injuries, including a 25-year-old Brit, a 48-year-old Russian, a 38-year-old rider from Japan, two from Poland and two from Sweden.

Just three riders were not injured in the fall.

Police have charged the bus driver NS, 36, from Nikšić, with violating traffic safety laws.

The driver claims he lost consciousness behind the wheel, according to the Montenegrin newspaper Vijesti.

NS suffered serious injuries and was kept overnight at the neurosurgical department of the capital’s Clinical Center.

Prosecutor Anđa Radovanović has asked for blood and urine samples to be taken from the driver to test for alcohol and drugs.

The bus was taking its routine route towards the village of Budva, about nine miles west of Obzovica, from the town of Cetinje when it crashed.

Photographs from the scene showed a number of the 42 rescue workers at the scene using equipment to hoist the bus out of the gorge.

A firefighter told Portal Analitika that locals from neighbouring towns helped out with the rescue effort.

‘Every accident is difficult to watch,’ he said.
