A woman sold a purse for £6,000 when she discovered a bag she’d bought for less than £1 was made with real diamonds.
Chandler West 29, from North Carolina, bought an antique 1920s Cartier Art Deco bag in November 2021 in an online estate sale.
When she made the purchase, she had no idea what its true worth was.
Explaining in a TikTok video, she said: ‘I just thought it looked old. I was like I don’t know when that’s from, but it looks old, like older than just vintage, like antique level old.
‘So I know it’s worth more than one dollar. And it’s pretty and I liked it so I bought it.’
No else was bidding on the purse, so she was able to pay just 81p.
The vintage clothing seller explained: ‘It sat in a pile of things I just needed to research that I hadn’t gotten around to yet.
‘Like okay, I’m going to research [the purse] and I’m going to figure out when you’re from and what your deal is.’
She took to a Facebook group to try and find out more about the bag.
One member said the purse may be made by luxury French brand Cartier in the 1920s.
To her shock, Chandler then Discovered Cartier Engraved on the underside of the bag’s clasp.
‘After a lot of squinting and flashlight shining, I knew that I had a real Cartier 1920s evening bag on my hands,’ she said.
A jeweler then confirmed all 12 of the stones on the bag – including the diamonds – were real.
An auctioneer estimated the item was worth £2,400 to £3,200.
Chandler was originally going to sell it on her Etsy shop, but decided against it when she realised she could make a lot more money at an auction.
In February, the bag was sold at Rago Auctions for £6,073.
With the buyer’s 26% premium, the new owner paid £7,693.
