Lionel Messi breaks Ronaldo’s record as PSG claim Ligue 1 title

As he opened the scoring for PSG in a 1-1 draw against Strasbourg, Lionel Messi overtook Cristiano Ronaldo for the most goals scored in Europe’s top five leagues. The result made the Parisians Ligue 1 champions.

At the Stade de la Meinau, Messi broke the scoring record and Paris Saint-Germain won the Ligue 1 championship for the record 11th time. However, Strasbourg, a tenacious team, managed to tie the score in the dying minutes of the game.

How it took place.

Kylian Mbappe provided a reminder of PSG’s threat early on by eluding several Strasbourg defenders in the box before Ismael Doukouré brilliantly made a move to stop him.

Following a spectacular save by Matz Sels to stop Renato Sanches’ volley from the ensuing corner, Lionel Messi had a great opportunity to score but was unable to do so.

Before the hour mark, PSG finally created some magic when Mbappé found enough room to pass the ball across for Messi to finish coolly for his 16th league goal of the year.

When Morgan Sanson’s initial attempt was saved and Kevin Gameiro, a former PSG frontman, tucked in the rebound in the 79th minute, Strasbourg’s tenacious defense paid off.

PSG won the Ligue 1 championship despite falling short of victory, much to the delight of the away fans.
