Pit lane chaos in F2 feature race

During the F2 feature race, Amaury Cordeel saw his back right tyre fly off in some pit lane chaos. It wasn’t put on correctly, causing it to come loose and hit a Campos mechanic in the pit lane.

This led to Pepe Martí having a slow stop. Cordeel had to retire the car. Martí also had a tyre incorrectly put on, moments after Cordeel’s incident. Martí also had to retire the car after the pit lane chaos.

In the post race press conference with the top 3 finishers, the topic of the pit lane incidents was brought up.

Isack Hadjar, the race winner, admitted, “My mechanic almost got destroyed.” The tyres hitting the campos mechanic at a dangerous speed, he said the mechanic ‘got lucky’. However, Hadjar noted how this isn’t the first time we’ve had an incident similar to this in F2.

Hadjar: “It’s happened in the past already.”

Most notably it happened last season in Zandvoort, with championship hopeful Frederik Vesti losing two wheels afters pitting. The wheels almost hitting the drivers behind.

In 2023 Arthur Leclerc has a wheel come off in the Austrian sprint race, almost hitting Ollie Bearman behind. Even further back, we saw it in 2021, with Christian Lungaard at Silverstone, losing a wheel in the pits after the stop.

Joshua Dürksen admitted to it being ‘scary’ because of the danger involved with the tyres. However, despite saying “these mistakes can happen.” Dürksen attributed the issues to the Mechanics getting used to new wheel guns. Even saying, “I don’t think it will happen much more often.”

Gabriel Bortoleto placed responsibility for the issues on the FIA. Admitting, “it’s not my job to fix it as well. It’s the FIA and the people that work on that.” Similarly to Hadjar he commented, “It’s not the first time that’s happened.”

A reason for issues with pit stops may be because of the reduced number of mechanics in comparison to Formula 1. Only having one mechanic per wheel, making pit stop mistakes far more common.
