Monaco E-Prix: Jaguar’s Play on Strategy to Victory for Evans

Mitch Evans secured his first Formula E victory of the season at the Monaco E-Prix, leading a one-two finish for Jaguar Racing. His teammate Nick Cassidy followed closely in second place, turning the race into a showcase of strategic excellence by Jaguar.

The race saw critical moves even before the first safety period was triggered. Notably, Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Éric Vergne, competing for DS Penske, both activated their first Attack Modes to gain a temporary boost in power.

Vandoorne successfully maintained his lead, while Vergne struggled and dropped to fifth, overtaken by Pascal Wehrlein of Porsche.

After the race resumed on lap nine following the safety car deployment, Jaguar initiated a strategic play that proved to be the turning point of the race.

Nick Cassidy deliberately slowed down the pace, bunching up the pack behind him. This was aimed at creating a strategic window for Evans to activate his Attack Mode without losing ground.

Vandoorne was the first to blink among the leaders, opting for his second Attack Mode on lap 10. This decision saw him drop positions as Cassidy adeptly moved inside at Mirabeau, altering the dynamic at the front of the race.

Evans capitalised on the situation by activating his Attack Modes on laps 11 and 13. Despite the high-risk nature of these moves, he managed not only to retain his lead but also to extend it, thanks to the space created by Cassidy’s tactful driving and the slow pace of the pack.

The teamwork between Evans and Cassidy was evident as they swapped positions on lap 14, ensuring that each could make the most of their Attack Mode phases. Cassidy, after taking his second Attack Mode on lap 17, subtly allowed Evans to pass on the descent from Casino Square, solidifying Jaguar’s lead.

The race was further complicated by a second safety car phase on lap 25 after Nico Müller’s collision at Rascasse left his vehicle stranded.

The incident, involving Jake Hughes of McLaren, resulted in a five-second penalty for Hughes due to the collision.

As the race headed into its final laps with the restart on lap 26, energy management became less of a concern. Evans aggressively pulled away, securing his position at the front and cruising to victory. This win marked his first Formula E victory since the previous season in London.

Vandoorne managed to fend off his teammate Vergne to finish third, ensuring a place on the podium. Despite the high hopes from the start, Wehrlein finished in fifth, retaining his lead in the championship standings but surely disappointed not to capitalise further.
