Wolff and Vassuer reprimanded for bad language at Las Vegas

The FIA has given both Toto Wolff and Fred Vassuer formal warnings after their use of bad language in the Las Vegas press conference.

Both team principals took part in last Friday’s press conference. Joined by James Vowles and Zak Brown, both Wolff and Vassuer showed frustration during the Las Vegas conference.

The conference took place following FP1 which had to be cancelled following a loose manhole cover.

This happened due to the manhole cover being sucked up by Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz.

Originally sucked loose by Alpine‘s Esteban Ocon, both Alpine and Ferrari suffered major damage.

“This [situation] will cost us a fortune – we fucked-up the session for Carlos”.

Ocon’s car had to be rebuilt around a new chassis while Sainz needed a new chassis and engine.

Although not their fault, Ferrari and Sainz were still given a 10-place penalty for using an additional energy store outside allocation.

Vassuer, who was clearly frustrated said: “This [situation] will cost us a fortune – we fucked-up the session for Carlos”.

However, Wolff also seemed passionate about the matter, defending F1 and Las Vegas.

He said: “You’re speaking about a fucking drain cover that’s been undone, that has happened before – that’s nothing, it’s FP1.”

Since the incident, both have been called to the stewards in Abu Dhabi to explain their language.

“The FIA will not tolerate the use of such language in FIA forums by any stakeholder.”

Despite this, neither was seen in breach of Article 12.2.1.f of the FIA’s International Sporting Code.

Both attended a formal hearing and were given formal warnings.

The FIA stated: “Based on the submission from the FIA, the FIA regards the language of this type to be unacceptable, moving forward, particularly when used by participants in the sport who have a high public profile and who are seen by many, especially younger, followers of the sport, as role models, and that in future the FIA will not tolerate the use of such language in FIA forums by any stakeholder.”

Both team principals were released from the matter due to their language not typical for their characters.

Both Wolff and Vasssuer seemed annoyed by the question of the journalists.

While Vassuer refused to answer Tom Clarkson’s question on Ferrari’s 2023 campaign, Wolff was seen bickering with the Daily Mail’s F1 correspondent.

This is not the first time a team principal has been called up for such behaviour.

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner was reprimanded for comments on the FIA’s handling of events at Monaco.
