Jack Doohan returns to the top step of the FIA Formula 2 podium as he stormed to a dominant feature race win around the Hungaroring. The Aussie took his first win of the season, leading the field from pole position and never looking back.

Championship leader Fred Vesti brought home another solid points haul and a respectable 2nd place behind Doohan, the Dane’s consistency further building his lead at the head of the standings.

As It Happened

Poleman Jack Doohan went unchallenged off the start, as Martins and Vesti wrestled over 2nd and 3rd into the first corner. Vesti would be victorious in that battle, taking P2 and following Doohan at the front.

Bearman fell back as the green lights were shown, being swamped by Hauger and Fittipaldi on faster soft tyres at the start. Correa had a lightning launch, gaining 5 places and putting himself into the points as the field settled into a rhythm in the opening laps.

As the teams and drivers started to think about mandatory pit stops, the Rodin Carlin of Zane Maloney came in early for his stop, forcing those behind to respond. Boschung and Crawford followed close behind Maloney, opting for the alternate strategy and hoping for an aggressive undercut of those further ahead.

Isack Hadjar became the first of the top 5 to stop, dragging those around him in too and forcing them to answer back. The ART driver of Pourchaire boxed for fresh rubber but was caught up behind a slower Amaury Cordeel, allowing the top 3 of Doohan, Vesti and Martins to build a gap whilst Pourchaire struggled to pass Cordeel.

As the leaders filtered through their stops, Doohan held a comfortable lead ahead of Vesti and Martins. Pourchaire was pushed wide by his ART teammate Victor Martins and forced over the marbles and into the runoff, allowing Hadjar to sneak through and take 5th.

The scuffling behind allowed Doohan to ease his lead further and further, remaining in the lead after pitting for fresh tyres and still holding a 8s gap to his closest rival of Vesti in P2.

Alternate strategy runner Ayumu Iwasa made his way quietly through the field and was in Pourchaire’s mirrors, hustling the Frenchman along before getting the switchback out of turn 1 on lap 26. With softer tyres than those around him, Iwasa was on the hunt and stole P4 from Hadjar with a late dive into the first corner on lap 35.

At the drop of the flag, Doohan secured a Grand Chelem victory to claim a well-deserved 26 points and return to victory in F2. Vesti pocketed solid points for his title challenge with rookie driver and reigning F3 champion Victor Martins showing his worth in P3.

Iwasa held 4th ahead of Hadjar and Pourchaire to bring home valuable points for both the drivers and teams standings.

How The Championship Looks

Vesti holds onto 1st in the F2 standings with 153 points, 11 points ahead of Pourchaire who sits on 142. Ayumu Iwasa occupies 3rd with 132 points with Martins jumping to 4th and Doohan up to 5th.

PREMA and ART sit level on points after round 10 on 247 points, DAMS remain comfortably in 3rd on 171 points.

Looking Ahead

Formula 2 returns to Spa-Francorchamps from July 28th-31st before the summer break interrupts the calendar.

Can Vesti hold onto his championship lead as those behind get up to speed and pick up big points?
