Italian GP Head Eager for Quick F1 Contract Renewal

Angelo Sticchi Damiani, the leader of the Italian Grand Prix, expresses an urgent need to finalize a fresh Formula 1 agreement with Liberty Media.

As the widely celebrated Dutch GP at Zandvoort may need to rotate its calendar position yearly, even the venerable Monza circuit is not guaranteed a permanent spot.

“The future is in our hands,” Damiani, the head of Italy’s automobile club Aci, told Italy’s Autosprint in anticipation of the upcoming Monza F1 race this weekend.

“We must be all together to guarantee an extension of the Contract with Liberty Media that expires in 2025,” he said. “And under conditions that are sustainable.

“And we must do it quickly.”

It’s common knowledge that Liberty and F1 are requesting substantial modifications at the venerable Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, which has existed for over a century.

“Monza is 100 years old and we are happy to be able to contribute so that the story continues,” Sticchi Damiani said.

“We are in a concretely advanced stage for the works of the underpasses and the resurfacing of the circuit. The commitment we made for 2024 will be met in time.

“By mid-October we will receive offers from companies and work could begin in November,” he revealed. “We are also working towards the approval of other things we intend to do, such as replacing the grandstands and the recovery of the high-speed track.”

Even though the present racing contract has some duration left, Sticchi Damiani stressed his eagerness to kick off dialogues with Liberty Media as soon as feasible.

“We are in a hurry,” he admitted.

“I have to sit down at the table with Liberty Media as soon as possible. We are two years from the expiry of the contract but the discussions must begin two years earlier.”
