In the top of the second inning, Stanton reached second base due to an error by the Blue Jays. With two outs, Yankees catcher Jose Trevino ripped a line drive to left field. Outfielder Davis Schneider fielded the ball cleanly on a one-hop and launched a throw toward home plate.
Despite Stanton’s well-documented lack of swiftness, Yankees third base coach Luis Rojas took a gamble, waving Stanton home. Stanton’s baserunning was not a sprint by any means; rather, it was a slow, deliberate trot, prompting comparisons to someone towing a trailer.
The tension mounted as Stanton rounded third base. Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen prepared for the throw, but Schneider’s toss sailed slightly up the line, creating a moment of hesitation for Jansen as he attempted to receive the throw. This brief delay proved crucial, as the slugger, in his own time, slid home safely for the game’s first run.
Yankees fans not happy
While the Yankees celebrated the hustle play and the first run on the board, Stanton’s lack of speed might irked fans, who slammed his lumbering journey home.
