New York Yankees 2, Boston Red Sox 6

BOSTON — In the first game of a split doubleheader on Sunday, the Boston Red Sox secured a 6-2 victory over the New York Yankees thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles by Connor Wong and Alex Verdugo in the sixth inning. With two outs, they launched their hits off the iconic Green Monster, contributing to a three-run surge for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox continued their dominance over their rival, the Yankees, by securing a 15-5 victory in the series opener on Friday. In the Sunday game, Adam Duvall and Justin Turner contributed to the Red Sox’s offensive success with RBI singles. With this win, the Red Sox extended their record against the Yankees to 4-1, further solidifying their position as the superior team in the series.

In the first inning, Gleyber Torres provided a spark for the Yankees with a two-run home run. However, the team faced the challenge of playing without their star player and reigning AL MVP, Aaron Judge, who has been sidelined for the past 11 games due to a sprained right toe. In Judge’s absence, the Yankees have struggled, posting a 4-7 record during this period. Furthermore, their overall record drops to 8-13 whenever Judge has been placed on the injured list throughout the season.

Sunday’s game served as the rescheduled matchup from the rainout that occurred on Saturday night.

Wong’s timely hit propelled the Red Sox into a 3-2 lead against Michael King (1-3). Just two pitches later, Verdugo followed suit with a hit, allowing Turner to score on his subsequent single.

Secured with a victory, Nick Pivetta (4-4), who had been moved to the bullpen in mid-May, delivered an impressive performance, pitching three flawless innings of relief and striking out four batters.

After Jake Bauers started the game with a ground-rule double, Gleyber Torres smacked a 97-mph fastball from opener Kaleb Ort, sending it soaring into the first row of the Monster seats.

In his second matchup against the Red Sox within a week, starter Clarke Schmidt displayed resilience by leaving five baserunners stranded in the first three innings. However, his efforts were short-lived as Rafael Devers drove in a run with a groundout, followed by Adam Duvall’s timely RBI hit that forced the right-hander out of the game.

The Yankees have chosen right-handed pitcher Luis Severino (0-1, 6.48 ERA) to take the mound in the second game of the doubleheader. He will be facing off against Red Sox right-handed pitcher Brayan Bello (3-4, 3.78 ERA).
