NEW YORK — In the 10th Inning, Brandon Nimmo delivered a clutch double to seal the victory for the New York Mets, allowing them to bounce back from a series of both mental and physical mistakes. Despite the errors, the Mets emerged triumphant with a 4-3 win over the New York Yankees, resulting in a split in the two-game Subway Series.

In a display of cunning baserunning, Isiah Kiner-Falefa seized the opportunity to steal home plate, taking advantage of Brooks Raley’s lack of attention on the mound. This daring move allowed the Yankees to score two runs without the need for a hit, propelling them to a 3-1 lead in the seventh inning.

In the subsequent inning, the Mets swiftly equalized the score as Ron Marinaccio unintentionally hit Nimmo with a pitch, followed by Starling Marte delivering an RBI single. However, the Mets’ rally came to an abrupt halt when Nimmo made an ill-advised wide turn at second base and was subsequently thrown out.

In the 10th inning, with Eduardo Escobar placed as the automatic runner on second base, Albert Abreu (2-2) managed to strike out Mark Vientos. Nick Ramirez entered the game as the reliever, and it was then that Nimmo launched a powerful hit that soared over Jake Bauers and struck the right-center wall. Escobar, seizing the opportunity, swiftly tagged up and dashed towards home, sliding headfirst to secure the winning run. This remarkable play granted the Mets, with their hefty $355 million payroll, only their second triumph in 11 games and marked their third walk-off victory of the season.

In a matchup featuring the Yankees’ Gerrit Cole and the Mets’ Justin Verlander, both pitchers delivered an exceptional performance, allowing a mere two runs over 12 innings. Their combined effort included 14 strikeouts and an impressive absence of walks. However, despite their remarkable outings, it was ultimately the bullpen that determined the outcome of the game.

Dominic Leone, who joined the Mets last month, secured his inaugural victory with the team as he improved his record to 1-2.

The Mets had a pair of defensive miscues and were involved in just the second-shift violation seen in the major leagues this season.

In a tied game at 1-1, Jeff Brigham issued a walk to Josh Donaldson to start the seventh inning, and Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch, marking the 209th time in his MLB career. Isiah Kiner-Falefa then hit a ground ball to the shortstop, and second baseman Jeff McNeil made an errant throw to first base, veering up the first-base line. The throw ricocheted off the glove of a diving Mark Vientos, while Kiner-Falefa had already crossed the base. Donaldson scored, giving the team a 2-1 lead.

Raley entered the game, and on a 1-1 pitch to Billy McKinney, Isiah Kiner-Falefa successfully stole second base. He then advanced to third when Francisco Álvarez’s throw to second base went into center field, resulting in an error. Taking advantage of Raley’s inattentiveness, Kiner-Falefa sneaked down the third-base line, and Raley failed to notice him. With Raley pitching from a full windup instead of the stretch, Kiner-Falefa made his move, sliding across the plate as the ball sailed to the backstop. It was the first time the Yankees had executed a straight steal of home since Jacoby Ellsbury did it against Tampa Bay on April 22, 2016.

In the eighth inning, with Giancarlo Stanton standing on second base, Jeff McNeil was penalized for a shift violation due to having his foot positioned on the shortstop side of second base. This marked only the second instance of such a violation in the inaugural season of the new restriction. The first violation was called against the Chicago White Sox during their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 9.

In front of a packed stadium with 44,121 enthusiastic fans, Gerrit Cole showcased his dominance by retiring the first 12 batters he faced. However, he eventually surrendered a double to Francisco Lindor that ricocheted off the right-center wall, followed by a two-out RBI double from Tommy Pham that bounced on the warning track. It’s worth noting that Pham has had success against Cole in the past, as he now holds an 11-for-29 record against the Yankees’ ace.

In the sixth inning, Jose Trevino kickstarted the offensive momentum of his team with a well-executed double. He crossed home plate shortly after on a single by Jake Bauers, who had an impressive three at-bats against Justin Verlander, facing a total of 24 pitches. Following Bauers, Giancarlo Stanton unleashed a scorching grounder that traveled at a staggering speed of 118.3 mph. However, Eduardo Escobar swiftly turned it into a double play by completing an around-the-horn play, marking the hardest-hit ball off Verlander since Statcast began recording data in 2015.
