New York Yankees 2, Boston Red Sox 3

NEW YORK — With help from a late error by second baseman Gleyber Torres, Kiké Hernández hit the game-winning single in the 10th Inning, giving the Boston Red Sox a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday night.

Brayan Bello displayed his efficiency by limiting the opposition to only three hits in an impressive seven-inning performance, while Justin Turner’s home run added to the Red Sox’s success. With this victory, Boston (33-33), currently in last place, emerged triumphant in two out of three closely contested matchups at Yankee Stadium. This initial series of the season between these long-standing rivals showcased low-scoring battles.

The Yankees mustered all their offensive output from just three hits, one of which was a fortuitous bounce off second base on Jose Trevino’s early two-run single.

Chris Martin notched his first career save with the Red Sox, pitching a flawless inning without conceding a hit. With a critical runner stationed on third base, he displayed his prowess by striking out both Trevino and rookie Anthony Volpe to seal the victory. This milestone marked Martin’s 10th career save overall.

In the 10th inning, Kiké Hernández delivered a precise single to left field off Ron Marinaccio (2-3), resulting in the crucial run scored by pinch-runner Adam Duvall. Duvall had been positioned at second base as the automatic runner and skillfully advanced to third base on Triston Casas’ groundout to the right side.

Billy McKinney showcased his athleticism by executing a remarkable leap at the top of the left-field fence, making a sensational catch to deny Pablo Reyes’ drive and prevent any additional damage.

Securing the win, Kenley Jansen (2-3) efficiently dealt with the opposing batters in the ninth inning, retiring them in order with a flawless 1-2-3 performance.

Clarke Schmidt, the starting pitcher for the Yankees, delivered 5 1/3 impactful innings, concluding his outing by retiring the last eight batters he faced. With a 2-1 lead in hand, New York ventured into the eighth inning.

In the opening of the inning, Hernández kickstarted the momentum with a single off Michael King. Taking advantage of a seemingly lackadaisical error by Torres, who couldn’t handle McKinney’s routine one-hop throw from left field, Hernández swiftly advanced to second base.

The Yankees paid a steep price for their earlier miscue. After King issued a walk to Reese McGuire, Reyes’ sacrifice bunt skillfully advanced both runners into scoring position. Capitalizing on the opportunity, Hernández crossed home plate to tie the game as Jarren Duran produced an RBI groundout.

Turner kicked off the second inning with a remarkable display of power, launching an opposite-field home run to the right side.

Josh Donaldson showed how good he was at the plate by getting a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the inning. McKinney hit a ground-rule double with two outs, moving Donaldson to third base. Hernández was in the right place to catch Trevino’s ground ball behind second base, and he did so with skill. But luck wasn’t on the side of the Red Sox when the ball bounced off the bag and into center field, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead with a two-run single.

In the third inning, New York got lucky again when Alex Verdugo’s single bounced off Duran’s leg and led to an unusual out. When Duran tried to run from first base, he got struck by the ball, which meant he was out.

The Yankees will have a day off on Monday before heading across town to Citi Field on Tuesday night for the start of a two-game Subway Series against the Mets. Unfortunately, both teams will be missing their injured power hitters, Aaron Judge and Pete Alonso. On the mound, right-handed pitcher Luis Severino (0-1, 5.75 ERA) will make his fifth start of the season, while the Mets will rely on three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer (5-2, 3.71 ERA). It’s worth noting that Severino has struggled in his previous two starts, surrendering three home runs in each outing.
