New York Yankees 0, Toronto Blue Jays 3

TORONTO — In the 10th inning, Danny Jansen hit a three-run homer, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 3-0.

Jansen hit his fourth home run of the season on the first pitch he saw from reliever Wandy Peralta (2-1). This was a long time after Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt and Yankees ace Gerrit Cole left a scoreless battle.

Before Jansen’s drive, which won the game, the Blue Jays were 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position. This was his second game-winning hit in four days. Sunday, Jansen’s single in the ninth inning scored two runs, giving Toronto a 6-5 win over Atlanta and completing a three-game sweep.

When Anthony Volpe made a mistake at the start of the bottom of the 10th, Whit Merrifield got on base and Cavan Biggio moved from second to third on his own.

New York’s rookie shortstop acknowledged that it was a play he should have made, considering that it was a play he had successfully executed many times before.

The Yankees moved Oswaldo Cabrera from left field to the infield, and Alejandro Kirk hit a ground ball to Volpe. Then, Jansen hit a home run to left, which ended the game. It was the first extra-inning home run of his career.

Toronto reliever Jordan Romano (3-2) pitched one inning for the win, and the Blue Jays won in their last at-bat for the fourth time this season. They also posted their seventh shutout, tying Tampa Bay for the most in the majors.

New York’s team lost for the second time in six games. With runners in scoring position, the Yankees were hitless, going 0 for 7.

In his last start, Bassitt shut out Atlanta with a two-hitter. This time, he went seven innings and didn’t let anyone score, extending his career-best perfect streak to 27 games. Even though he was sick, he pitched and gave up three singles, one walk, and seven strikeouts.

On April 30 at home against Seattle, the right-hander let a grand slam in the first inning, but since then he hasn’t allowed a run in any of his subsequent starts.

Roger Clemens, who went 33 straight innings without giving up a run in 1998, and Dave Stieb, who went 34 straight without giving up a run between 1988 and 1989, are the only Toronto pitchers with longer shutout streaks.

In the seventh inning, Jose Trevino hit a broken-bat flare that was too high for first baseman Brandon Belt to catch. Bassitt jumped on the ball and dove into the wall to tag Trevino out.

Yimi Garcia took over for Bassitt in the eighth, but he left after Aaron Judge walked with two outs. Tim Mayza came in and walked everyone before Volpe, who was pinch-hitting, struck out.

After the first two Blue Jays reached base in the bottom half, Volpe made up for it by jumping to catch Kirk’s line drive and then flipping to second to double off Biggio.

In the ninth, Biggio was up to bat against New York closer Michael King. He flew out, leaving runners on second and third.

Cole was taken out of the game after the first two batters reached base in the seventh. When Clay Holmes came in, the next three hitters were out.

Cole expressed his gratitude, stating that Clay was exceptionally skilled at his job.

The first two Blue Jays batters got on base because of handling mistakes, one of which was made by Cole. But the right-hander got the next three outs by striking out two of them.

Cole let seven hits through. He had two walks and six strikeouts.

Cole mentioned that when the opposition plays well, it serves as inspiration for him to also perform at a high level in the game.
