Yankees injury latest: Updates on Rodon, Stanton, Montas, Donaldson rehabs

Last Updated on May 14, 2023 by Inna Zeyger

Here is the latest Yankees injury update given by manager Aaron Boone on May 13.

Yankees’ Rodon rehab this weekend

Carlos Rodon, a left-handed pitcher for the Yankees, may be able to resume his throwing program this weekend. The $162-million signing starter is no longer in pain following Tuesday’s cortisone treatment.

During Saturday’s Yankees-Rays game, the manager, Aaron Boone, said that they would take another look at things once he starts throwing again. He added that they were hoping this would happen real soon.

After suffering a forearm strain in his lone spring training start in March, Rodon has been out with back discomfort since early April. Three back specialists advised the Yankees to give Rodon a cortisone shot to flush out his back problems, and the team followed their advice.

Rodon threw on May 3, but he hasn’t thrown since. He did, however, work out on Thursday and Friday. Boone said that the first few days after getting the shot were pretty uncomfortable due to the soreness. But he added that things seemed to be going okay and that Rodon was able to do some light physical activity on Thursday and a bit more on Friday.

No Yankees plan for Donaldson yet

Josh Donaldson has not yet begun his rehab assignment, and the Yankees have not announced when it will begin. He strained his right hamstring. So it is unclear when he will be ready to play again. It’s possible that it will occur on Tuesday, but it could also take a bit longer.

Boone says that things seem to be going well, but they haven’t decided when he can go outside and play yet. He said that the player looked good to him and was gradually increasing his running and movements on the field. Boone also said that Donaldson had been hitting for a while and that they were hoping he would be back on the field soon. But the Yankees haven’t decided on anything yet, so it was still uncertain.

Also, Donaldson has not been in a game since April 6. That means that, as of Saturday, he has missed 35 games in a row.

Stanton rehab is on the cards

Giancarlo Stanton’s left hamstring strain has kept him from playing for the Yankees in the outfield or as a designated hitter since April 16. The good news is that the Yankees will apparently start talking about a rehab assignment for him in the next few days.

Boone said that he thought the player looked pretty good when he saw him moving around the outfield on Friday. He said that Giancarlo had worked hard on defense and that things were looking good for him. Boone added that he didn’t have any other news, but he did notice that the player was moving in the center like Giancarlo, which was a good sign.

Yankees feel Montas is close to throwing

After a no-throw period following shoulder surgery on February 22, Boone announced on May 1 that right-hander Frankie Montas was close to beginning a throwing regimen.

After nearly two weeks, there has been zero development. On Saturday, Boone said that things were looking good, and the Montas was getting closer to being where they wanted him to be.
