The New York Yankees received positive updates on Jake Bauer, who exited Saturday’s game in the first inning after colliding with the left-field wall following an impressive catch. Fortunately, Jake Bauers will not require a stint on the injured list as the MRI results for his right knee came back with the same diagnosis as the preliminary evaluation on Friday — a contusion.

Although Jake Bauers had to be taken out of the game, the MRI ruled out any significant damage. He does have some swelling that needs to subside before he can resume playing. Given the Yankees’ pressing need for his skills and the form of Aaron Hicks, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswaldo Cabrera, and Franchy Cordero in the outfield, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Jake Bauers returning back into the lineup early in the upcoming week.

Jake Bauers avoids going to the injured list

Yankees manager Aaron Boone has said that Jake Bauers has a “day-to-day” injury, which won’t need a move to the injured list.

The mishap occurred after Jake Bauers took a sensational catch in the top of the first inning on Saturday. But X-rays didn’t reveal anything. On Sunday, Jake Bauers limped about with a wrapped right knee, but it didn’t seem to be as terrible as it had on Saturday night.

“There’s still swelling and it’s stiff, but the pain is down,” Jake Bauers said on Sunday morning. “I feel like I’m walking pretty good. I’m walking pain-free. The only thing that’s keeping my range of motion down is the swelling. I’m sure today we’ll try to get all of that out of there.”

According to Boone, Jake Bauers went to have an MRI on his damaged right knee on Sunday, and the findings were positive. For now, his move to the injured list is completely out.

“We’ll see where we’re at [Monday] and treat it day to day,” Boone said. “Everything checked out well with the knee, he’s just got that swelling in there. We [will try to] get that out of there and hopefully get him in the mix.”

Yankees, Jake Bauers saved from the worst

On his debut with the Yankees on Saturday night, Jake Bauers was injured in the first inning. He was promoted from the taxi squad to an MLB deal. Things might as well have been much worse. Bauers, fresh from Triple-A, rescued a run for the Yankees with a magnificent spinning catch as he slammed knee-first into the left-field wall.

Before Sunday’s game, Jake Bauers was able to walk around the locker room while his knee was wrapped. He reported feeling better while waiting for the MRI findings, but the swelling persisted.

“He’s good,” Boone said. “Knee is clean, so he’s not going to have to go on the IL. He’s just got that swelling in there. So get that out of there and hopefully get him in the mix.”

On Sunday, without Aaron Judge and Jake Bauers, the Yankees were down to 24 players, with just two on the bench. On Monday night, they’ll likely repeat the same action.

Franchy Cordero is back

Sunday, after sending outfielder Franchy Cordero to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for two days, the Yankees called him up from Triple-A to preserve his roster spot. Instead, he spent the day on the taxi squad. In case Jake Bauers has to be placed on the disabled list, Franchy Cordero, who flew to Boston on Saturday, will return to Dallas on Sunday morning.

On Sunday, before Jake Bauers’ test results were available, he returned to the Yankees’ locker room. Instead of adding Cordero to the Major League Baseball roster, the organization placed him on the taxi squad. The Yankees may have to play on Monday with a short bench again if it turns out that Cordero isn’t required.

The New York Yankees’ offense has been terrible this season, but the team has also had to contend with key players being hurt and performing poorly. Cordero started out hot but has since cooled down significantly. He was recently demoted to Triple-A but has since been recalled.

The Yankees’ plan to call up players from the minors to fill important roles is doomed to fail. The team’s general manager, Brian Cashman, who didn’t add an offensive player, must be frustrated by the number of injuries his squad has suffered. The depth has limited major league experience. These setbacks demonstrate the team’s vulnerability and contribute to their recent losing streak.

Severino To Make Rehab Start

After throwing well in a live session two days ago, Boone stated that starting pitcher Luis Severino is close to a rehab assignment. High-A Tampa is counting on Severino to make his return to the mound on either Wednesday or Thursday as he recovers from a lat strain.

“Sevy’s doing well,” Boone said Sunday.

The right-hander’s powerful fastball hasn’t yet come to the aid of the Yankees this season. His record in last year was 7-3, and his earned run average was 3.18. On Friday, he threw forty pitches during live batting practice.

Stanton, Donaldson make progress

The Yankees manager has said that injured regulars Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson are both hitting, throwing, and jogging.

Boone did not provide a timetable for the return of either player on Sunday, but he did add that they are “both definitely making progress.”

Since April 15th, when he suffered a Grade 2 leg injury, Stanton has been out. Donaldson last played on April 5, and around two weeks later, when he was rehabilitating his hamstring, he suffered another injury.

Kahnle Feels Good After Bullpen

The same may be said about Tommy Kahnle. He reported feeling OK during a practice exercise on Sunday morning.

It’s been almost a month since Kahnle’s bicep tendinitis flared up. Twenty pitches total, four of which were changeups, were thrown throughout the practice. Thursday will be his next scheduled inning for pitching.

“Everything felt right,” Kahnle said Sunday.

Since 2023, Kahnle has not thrown yet. He joined the Yankees on a two-year deal this summer. The pitcher was earlier in the Bronx from 2017 to 2020.
