TAMPA, Fl. — After beating the Braves 10–4 in the Grapefruit League on Sunday, the Yankees sent seven players who were not on their roster to their minor-league camp. The first roster cuts by the New York Yankees mostly included non-roster invitees and a few players who might not make the 40-man roster.
The Yankees spring training has been into its second week. Their first game will be against the Giants at Yankee Stadium in three and a half weeks. By then, the roster will have to be down to 26 players.
After the end of the first full week of spring training play, Austin Wells, Elijah Dunham, and Josh Breaux won’t remember their first big league spring training with the Yankees fondly. All three were shut down early in camp because of injuries. All three were among the first people the Yankees cut. Pitchers Sean Boyle, D.J. Snelten, and Mitch Spence, as well as catcher Anthony Seigler, were also let go.
MLB Pipeline ranks Wells (No. 4), Dunham (No. 19), and Breaux (No. 20) among the Yankees’ top 30 prospects. Due to injury, they only played one spring training game together.
Outfielder Elijah Dunham, who hit .248/.349/.448 for Double-A Somerset last year, was also invited to major league camp as a non-roster invitee, but he was also farmed out. Dunham did well in his one game by going 2-for-3 and making a diving catch, but he hurt his shoulder during the catch and hasn’t played in more than a week. Wells fracture his rib right before pitchers and catchers showed up, and it will take him 6–8 weeks to heal. Breaux’s elbow problem started before the games started.
Anthony Seigler, a catcher who has yet to play above A-ball. It should be noted that, if healthy, any player may return in spring road games, since clubs often utilize minor league camp participants to fill up trip rosters.
After the cuts, the Yankees had 33 pitchers and 29 position players left in camp.
The Yankees only have five catchers on their roster, and for a while, they will only have four catchers to use. Kyle Higashioka left the club on Monday to join Team USA in Arizona and get ready for the World Baseball Classic later this month.
