BCCI Contemplates Foreign Head Coach, Stephen Fleming and Tom Moody in Talks: Sources

The senior national men’s team could be coached by a foreigner, according to the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI). For the top position in the Indian cricket team, the wealthiest cricket board has reportedly sought former SRH coach Tom Moody and head coach Stephen Fleming of CSK.

If former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming applies for the position, the BCCI will move forward with appointing him as Rahul Dravid’s replacement.

The BCCI announced on May 13 that applications for the position of head coach would be accepted until May 27, the day following the IPL 2024 championship. Board secretary Jay Shah says incumbent Rahul Dravid is eligible to reapply. The board is nevertheless leaning toward hiring a foreign coach. After the June T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, Dravid’s reign as team captain, which began in 2021, will come to an end.

Stephen Fleming is expected to apply for the position prior to the board’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) starting to interview the shortlisted applicants, according to sources. Fleming’s accomplishments in the Indian Premier League with the Super Kings are widely known. Fleming and MS Dhoni joined the team as head coaches in 2009, and they both contributed to CSK’s transformation into a championship contender.

Fleming’s influence has frequently been overshadowed by the brilliant work of MS Dhoni, but the former captain of New Zealand has received a lot of acclaim for his role in fostering a winning culture at CSK. On the other side, Tom Moody led SRH to victory in the 2016 Indian Premier League.

The senior national men’s team’s last foreign coach was Duncan Fletcher. His term came to an end as the team captained by MS Dhoni lost the 2015 World Cup semifinal. After the Greg Chappell scandal, India was hesitant to bring in foreign coaches. However, when Gary Kirsten was brought in in 2008, the former South African cricket player was instrumental in India’s historic World Cup victory in 2011. Interestingly, Kirsten was named head coach of Pakistan’s senior men’s national squad.
