In support of the impact player rule in IPL 2024, former India coach Ravi Shastri noted that the current season has seen a number of exciting finishes. Indian captain Rohit Sharma has questioned the Impact Player rule, claiming that it hinders the development of all-rounders in India, and it has been cited as a major factor leading to the high scores obtained in the IPL 2024. 
 
The first well-known Indian player to express disapproval of the rule was Rohit, who noted that it had been tested in the domestic Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 competition before being implemented in the IPL in 2023. Teams are allowed to replace a member of the starting XI announced at the toss with a 12th player at any time during the match, according to the rule.

On Ravi Ashwin’s YouTube channel, Ravi Shastri said ,”I like the Impact Player [rule].” You have to change with the times.” It’s true that similar incidents occur in other sports. Its finishes are more precise. I believe that it’s a good rule to adapt to the times you live in. You witnessed how many close calls we had in the Indian Premier League last year. Thus, it has indeed made a significant difference. Some people, like India captain Rohit Sharma, think the restriction impedes the growth of all-round players, but others see its advantages.
 
Ashwin, for instance, cited Dhruv Jurel, who began his IPL career in 2023 as an impact player and made his India Test debut a year later. “You know, when any new rule comes in, there will be people who will try and justify why that’s not right,” said Shastri. “But in time, when you see the scores—200 and 190—and then, like you mentioned, individuals grabbing that opportunity and making the most of it, people will start re-looking at how they think about it.”
 
After speaking with stakeholders during the T20 World Cup 2024, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah stated that the Impact Player rule was “not permanent” and that a decision about its application in the next IPL editions would be made.
