“They’re favorites but they’re not clear favorites because of…”: Nasser Hussain On Indian Team For ODI World Cup 2023

Former England captain Nasser Hussain believes that India is among the favorites to win the upcoming T20 World Cup on their home turf, starting on October 5. While recognizing India’s strength in world-class batters like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as well as the return of Jasprit Bumrah and the emergence of Shubman Gill, Hussain cautioned that India is not the clear favorite due to the quality of other competing teams.

Nasser Hussain commended India’s ODI World Cup squad, highlighting the presence of exceptional white-ball batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He also praised the potential future star, Shubman Gill, and the return of Jasprit Bumrah. According to Hussain, India’s squad ranks among the best in terms of batting and bowling.

Naseer said, “They’re favorites but they’re not clear favorites because of the amount of quality sides there are. If you look at their squad, they have two of the greatest white ball batters to ever play the game in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. They have a potential future great in Shubman Gill and Bumrah coming back is fantastic news. So if you look at their batting and bowling, it’s right up there among one of the best squads.”

Hussain stated: “You could argue that there’s pressure all the time on Indian players. But where they have fallen short is the knockouts since the 2011 World Cup. They need to play above par, play fearless cricket. I think they will get to the knockout stage, but when they get to the semifinal, that’s when they need to play fearless cricket.”

Hussain pointed out that India’s squad differs from teams like England and Australia because it lacks all-rounders. Indian batters do not bowl, and bowlers do not contribute significantly with the bat. This distinct team makeup sets India apart from some of its competitors.

He further added: “An area where they lack is if you look at the batters, they don’t bowl and the bowlers don’t bat. So the side has a different make-upto England and Australia with all the all-rounders.”

The former England captain highlighted that India’s challenge lies in performing well in knockout games. He mentioned that India has faced difficulties in the knockout stages since winning the 2011 World Cup. To succeed, Hussain emphasized the importance of playing fearless cricket and rising above the pressure, especially in semifinal matches.

Hussain explained: “You could argue that there’s pressure all the time on Indian players. But where they have fallen short is the knockouts since the 2011 World Cup. They need to play above par, play fearless cricket. I think they will get to the knockout stage, but when they get to the semifinal, that’s when they need to play fearless cricket.”

While Nasser Hussain Believes that India is among the favorites to win the ODI World Cup, he emphasized that they are not the clear favorites due to the competitive field of teams. India’s squad strength in batting and bowling was acknowledged, but the need to perform fearlessly in knockout games was stressed as a crucial factor for success.
