“I’m trying not to think…:” Harry Brook Opens Up Being Left Out Of England’s 2023 ODI World Cup Squad

Cricket can be a roller coaster of emotions, especially when selecting for major tournaments. For a young talent like Harry Brook, missing out on England’s provisional 15-man squad for the upcoming World Cup in India was undoubtedly disappointing. Despite the setback, Brook is determined to put the disappointment behind him and focus on his future endeavors.

Brook had shown promise and made an impression across various formats in his short international career. However, his chances were affected by Ben Stokes’ decision to reverse his retirement from ODIs, leading to England prioritizing experience over youth. Brook’s omission surprised many, but he acknowledges the quality of Stokes and respects the decision.

In a recent match for Northern Superchargers, where he played a quickfire knock of 44 off 24 balls, Brook expressed his thoughts about the situation. He admitted that there might have been more he could have done over the past six months to strengthen his case.

Harry Brook said, “Obviously, it’s disappointing, but I can’t do anything about it now. You’ve just got to move on. I’m trying not to think about it anymore. I’ve not had many conversations with Matthew Mott or Jos. They said with Stokesy coming back; I would probably miss out this time. He is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can’t complain, can I? I’m playing well at the minute and could potentially add value to the team. But there’s always something more you could do.”

Brook stated, “I haven’t had much opportunity to play one-day cricket, whether that be for Yorkshire or England, and although I’ve played a lot of T20 cricket, I don’t know if I’ve done as well as I have in the past in the last six months, so that might have had an effect.”

Brook’s case attracted attention from cricket pundits, including Jofra Archer and Kevin Pietersen. Archer expressed surprise when he learned about Brook’s omission live on-air, while Pietersen openly voiced his astonishment at the decision. Pietersen even suggested he would have selected Brook ahead of another player in the squad, highlighting his belief in Brook’s potential.

While the road ahead might be challenging, Brook’s attitude suggests resilience and a determination to prove himself on the cricketing stage. Every player’s journey is filled with ups and downs, and Brook’s journey is no exception. As cricket fans, we can expect to see more of Harry Brook in the future as he strives to make his mark in the international arena.
