Suryakumar Yadav, despite his success in T20 cricket, has been facing challenges in ODI cricket. Given a golden opportunity to establish himself as India’s favored No.4 for the 2023 World Cup without an injured Shreyas Iyer, the 32-year-old has been unable to replicate his T20 exploits.
With scores of 19 and 24 in the ongoing series against the West Indies, he has a tally of 17 innings without a fifty in ODI cricket, leaving fans disappointed. However, his batting struggles were not the only point of contention, as a comment made towards teammate Kuldeep Yadav during the 2nd ODI left fans vexed.
During the 29th over of the West Indies chase in the 2nd ODI, with the home team closing in on victory, Suryakumar Yadav was heard saying, “Tu hamara Kachra hai” to Kuldeep Yadav, referencing a character from the iconic Bollywood movie Lagaan, who was a spin bowler. The comment disappointed fans on social media and raised concerns about the team’s spirit and camaraderie.
In the absence of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who was rested to test India’s bench strength for the 2023 World Cup, the batting struggled in the 2nd ODI. Only Ishan Kishan stood out, scoring his second successive fifty. Despite a decent show by the bowlers, the target of 181 was not enough to defend, and West Indies chased it down with ease, leaving the series level at 1-1.

The upcoming third ODI against the West Indies will be Suryakumar Yadav’s last opportunity to make a case for himself in the World Cup squad before the focus shifts to the Asia Cup in late August, where Shreyas Iyer is expected to make a return along with KL Rahul.
