Big Penalty Imposed By ICC On Indian And Australian Teams

The final of the World Test Championship (WTC) between India and Australia witnessed an intense battle on the cricket field and penalties for slow over rates and code of conduct breaches. The Indian men’s cricket team faced a 100 percent fine of their match fee, while the victorious Australian team was fined 80 percent. Additionally, Indian Opener Shubman Gill was slapped with a fine for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct.

In the World Test Championship final, the Indian team was found to be five overs short of the target, even after time allowances were considered. As a result, they were fined 100 percent of their match fee.

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, players are penalized 20 percent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allocated time. Australia, on the other hand, was found to be four overs short and received an 80 percent fine of their match fees.

In addition to the team penalties, Indian Opener Shubman Gill faced a fine of 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Article 2.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This article prohibits players from publicly criticizing or making inappropriate comments about incidents occurring in international matches. Gill took to social media to express his disagreement with the umpiring decision that led to his dismissal in the second innings of the match. His comments were deemed a violation of the code of conduct.

Richie Richardson, an Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees member, imposed the penalties. The on-field umpires Richard Illingworth, Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Richard Kettleborough, and fourth umpire Kumar Dharmasena charged Gill for his breach. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. In this case, Gill accepted the sanction, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

These penalties remind teams and players to uphold the spirit of the game and respect the governing body’s regulations.
