Ranking the oldest squads in the Premier League

You can’t buy experience and this list of Premier League clubs have stacked their squads with seasoned professionals for the current campaign.

But which Premier League teams have the oldest squads in 2023/24? We’ve ranked the oldest squads in the division by average age.

Ranking the oldest squads in the Premier League:

Nottingham Forest and Luton Town – 26.4

Nottingham Forest and Luton Town kick off this list, with each possessing an average age of 26.4.

Nottingham Forest’s recent recruitment can hardly be called considered, as the club have splashed the cash in a chaotic regime since being promoted back into the Premier League.

Forest signed a staggering 30 players during the 2022/23 season, a British record, including over thirties in Jonjo Shelvey, Chris Wood and Felipe.

Luton, meanwhile, are a Premier League club for the first time after a remarkable run through the divisions across the past decade. The Hatters have bolstered their squad with Premier League experience after signing Ross Barkley (29), Andres Townsend (32), Marvelous Nakamba (29) and Tim Krul (35).

Crystal Palace – 26.6

Crystal Palace have the oldest manager in Premier League history after Roy Hodgson returned to the club last season, with the 76-year-old extending his second spell with the Eagles for a further season during the summer.

Palace also have one of the oldest squads in the division, with an average age of 26.6. However, the South Londoners have made progress in reducing their average age, having had the oldest squad in the Premier League in 2020/21 (28.8).

The Eagles have focused on emerging talent in recent transfer windows, with the likes of Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Matheus Franca giving the side a more youthful look.

The average age is increased due to the presence of stalwarts in James Tomkins (34), Joel Ward (33) and Nathaniel Clyne (32).

Newcastle – 26.6

Newcastle also have an average age of 26.6, though their squad rebuild appears to be working under Eddie Howe. Last season the Magpies achieved a top four finish to secure Champions League football for the first time since 2002/03.

Newcastle’s five summer signings have an average age of just 20.8, as the club look to bring down the age of their squad and plan for the long term.

West Ham – 28.1

There’s a significant leap to the next team on this list, with West Ham’s average age north of 28 years old.

David Moyes has preferred experience over youth during a strong start to the season for the Irons. 10 players have started at least eight Premier League fixtures this season, with the youngest among them the 26-year-old pair of Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta.

The 33-year-old Michail Antonio remains West Ham’s first-choice forward, while Vladimir Coufal (31), Alphonse Areola (30) and Emerson Palmieri (29) have started every league game.

Fulham – 28.6

Fulham boast the oldest average age in the Premier League this season at 28.6 years old.

The Cottagers have a number of veterans who remain crucial to Marco Silva’s plans, including 36-year-old captain Tim Ream and experienced winger Willian (35).

Fulham did hand a debut to teenager Luke Harris (18) earlier this season, though the Welshman is one of just two u-23 players – alongside Rodrigo Muniz – to make a Premier League appearance for the west Londoners this season.
