Which Team Has the Best Odds to Win the 2024 Euro Cup?

The summer of 2024 will deliver the latest big hit of international football with the European Championships. Germany is the host nation for this latest edition and thereby automatically secured a spot in the Finals.

Germany were only one of two countries, along with Turkey, to have tabled interest in hosting the tournament and Germany won the vote by a landslide. The format of the tournament stays the same with 24 nations heading to the festival of football.

But what do the latest European Championship odds say about the likely winners of the competition? Will there be a first–time winner? How will home advantage favour Germany? Can England shake off recent major tournament near-misses and go all the way?

French Fancy – Les Blues Favourites

France are the current, and narrow 9/2 (5.5) favourites in the outright winner market for Euro 2024. The 2018 World Cup winners made a surprisingly early exit from the last edition, falling in the Round of 16 in a penalty shoot-out against Switzerland.

With the superstar power of Kylian Mbappé, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembélé they can go far. France has won the European Championships twice before, in 1984 and 2000.

Previous European Championship Winners

  • 3 – Germany 3 (1972, 1980, 1996)
  • 3 – Spain (1964, 2008, 2012)
  • 2 – Italy (1968, 2020*)
  • 2 – France (1984, 2000)
  • 1 – Russia, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Denmark, Greece

England – Will Three Lions Roar?

England are 4/1 (5.0) second–favourite in Euro 2024 betting odds. Runners–up at Euro 2020 and losing semi-finalists at the 2022 World Cup, the Three Lions have been knocking on the door of their first silverware since the 1966 World Cup.

Following another easy qualification campaign during which they beat Italy twice, England will go to Germany in 2024 as one of the front-runners. England boast a talented squad with star power like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, and this could be a great chance for them.

England’s Women are reigning European Champions, what a feat if the men could join them in the same standing.

Germany – Can Hosts Thrive?

Host nation Germany are 6/1 (7.0) third–favourites. After a series of poor results, Julian Nagelsmann was called on to take charge of the national side in the autumn of 2023. He replaced Hansi Flick, who became the first-ever head coach of Germany to get sacked.

Sometimes hosting a tournament can be a curse because there is no competitive action to be had through playing qualifiers. Germany went W1 D1 L4 in their first six matches of 2023 under Flick, so desperately needed a change.

The Germany squad boasts talent, but a key crop of their players like Mats Hummels, captain Ilkay Gundogan and Thomas Müller are also their most aged.

Germany are three-time European Champions, winning in 1972, 1980 and 2000. The previous time Germany acted as hosts in 1988, they reached the semi-finals. Only three times has an edition of the European Championships been won by the host nation.

Spain and Portugal

Spain had a fairly steady qualification campaign to reach Euro 2024. They are missing the kind of star power and clinical punch that saw them win back-to-back European Championships in 2008 and 2012. But Spain reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and could be a contender from a 7/1 (8.0) quote.

Portugal will be looking for their second European Championship title after winning it in 2016. Cristiano Ronaldo should be with the squad, fitness permitting. Ronaldo aside, Portugal have a very good, young talented squad.

Portugal misfired in falling at the Round of 16 at the last edition, but have rebuilt very well and their current 9/1 (10.0) winners odds hint at that.

Long Shots?

The five teams above are all in single figures in the football betting odds, and appear to be where a winner is likely to come from. However, surprise long-odds winners have cropped up in the European Championships.

In the last eight editions, both Denmark and Greece have come from nowhere to claim the title. Portugal’s victory at France in 2016 saw them defy some sizeable pre-tournament underdog odds too.

Which teams could pull together a surprise title run at Germany 2024 from holding long outsider odds? The Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Croatia are among the most likely candidates from this category of contenders.
