Ranking the Premier League players with the most goal contributions per 90 this season

Goal contributions are the standard on which Premier League forwards are judged, but who have been the most productive players in the league across the opening weeks of the 2023/24 campaign?

Using only players to have played a minimum of 300 minutes this season, we’ve ranked the Premier League players with the most goals and assists per 90.

Ranking the Premier League players with the most goal contributions per 90 minutes this season:

5. Erling Haaland – Manchester City (1.12)

Erling Haaland is the league’s leading scorer once again with the Manchester City forward having scored nine goals in nine appearances for the Premier League champions.

Haaland scored a record-breaking 36 league goals last season and will take some stopping in his bid to win back-to-back Golden Boot accolades, having raced out of the traps to take an early lead in the standings in 2023/24.

However, the Norwegian ranks only fifth on this list having registered just one assist so far this season. The 23-year-old has averaged 1.12 goals and assists per 90 minutes in the Premier League.

Such has been the mind-boggling standard he has set since arriving into English football, that’s a significant drop on the 1.72 goal contributions per 90 managed last season, when Haaland was named as the PFA Player of the Year.

4. Ollie Wakins – Aston Villa (1.17)

Ollie Watkins is loving life at Aston Villa under Unai Emery, having found the best form of his career since the Spaniard’s appointment at Villa Park.

Watkins has now been directly involved in 26 goals in 33 appearances in the Premier League since Emery’s appointment, while he is the first player in Europe’s top five leagues to reach 5+ goals and 5+ assists this season.

Recalled to the England squad this month, he scored in the 1-0 friendly win over Australia and appears in pole position to claim a place in the squad for Euro 2024.

3. Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (1.26)

Mohamed Salah has started the season in sensational form, with no player in the Premier League having been directly involved in more goals (11).

Salah has seven goals and four assists after a brace in the Merseyside Derby at the weekend, averaging 1.26 goal contributions per game this season. Only Erling Haaland (9) has scored more goals than the 31-year-old, who is targeting a record-equalling fourth Premier League Golden Boot this season.

Liverpool turned down a big bid from the Saudi Pro League for Salah last summer and that decision has proved a wise one for the Reds. Elite goalscorers and creators are difficult to find in top-level football and Salah, on current form, is both.

2. Callum Wilson – Newcastle (1.35)

Callum Wilson has had to deal with spells out of the side at Newcastle since the arrival of Alexander Isak, but the forward continues to provide invaluable contributions whenever on the field.

Last season was the most prolific Premier League campaign of Wilson’s career as the 31-year-old scored 18 league goals for the Magpies, a run of form which helped Newcastle secure a top four finish and Champions League qualification.

Wilson has started just three Premier League games so far this season, but has returned five goals in just 329 minutes of action.

He’s banging on the door for a more regular role in Eddie Howe’s side.

1. Darwin Nunez – Liverpool (1.58)

Darwin Nunez’s first season at Liverpool proved a mixed bag as the forward mixed moments of real quality with some rash end product, but the Uruguayan has shown enough to demonstrate he can be a formidable threat in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Nunez leads the Premier League for goal contributions per 90 minutes this season, having returned three goals and three assists from just 339 minutes. Klopp is yet to place his full trust in Nunez, though the 24-year-old is pushing for an extended run in the Reds’ side.

Remarkably, each of Nunez’s six assists since arriving into the Premier League have come for Mohamed Salah, a partnership that Liverpool will hope can blossom as the club look to compete at the top end of the division.
