Liverpool take on Everton in the Merseyside Derby at Anfield this weekend as the Reds look to maintain their strong start to the Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have started the season brightly, but will be looking to bounce back having picked up just one point from their past two matches.

The Toffees have had an inconsistent start to the campaign, and will be aiming to beat their arch-rivals at Anfield for just the second time in 24 years.

Despite sitting in fourth place, the Reds’ start to the season has been positive, as they sit top of their Europa League group after recording wins against Union Saint-Gilloise and LASK, as well as remaining in the EFL Cup.

The red half of Merseyside have been labelled the ‘Comeback Kings’, picking up 10 points from losing positions, a league high. These include a late Darwin Nunez double to topple Newcastle at St James’ Park and a Mohamed Salah brace to earn a point away at Brighton last time out.

The 2019/20 champions have only tasted defeat once this season, against leaders Tottenham in a game littered in controversy. Nine-man Liverpool were dealt a hammer blow when Joel Matip scored an own goal in the 96th minute to suffer their first loss in 17 league games.

No player has recorded more Premier League goal contributions this season than Egyptian forward Salah, who has five goals and four assists in eight games.

At the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper Alisson Becker has only one clean sheet so far this season and Andrew Robertson is set to miss the fixture after picking up an arm injury on international duty with Scotland.

After seeing red against Spurs, midfielder Curtis Jones is suspended for the derby, but winger Diogo Jota is back in contention after seeing out a one-match ban. Cody Gakpo looks a doubt for the clash following a knee injury.

Everton: LWWLW

The league table doesn’t make great reading for Sean Dyche’s men as they languish in 16th, three points off the bottom three. But, after a poor start to the season, a 3-1 win at Brentford looks to have kickstarted the Toffees’ campaign.

Everton failed to score in four of their first five league games, their only strikes coming away at rock bottom Sheffield United in a 2-2 draw, but since the return of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin from injury the Blues look rejuvenated in front of goal.

The former Sheffield United man was on the scoresheet in his side’s 3-1 win at the Gtech Community Stadium, as well as scoring in a 2-1 home defeat to Premier League newcomers Luton.

The Toffees also remain in the EFL Cup after surprising high-flying Aston Villa in a 2-1 away win in round three.

In their final game before the break, Everton comfortably beat fellow strugglers Bournemouth 3-0 to record their first home win of the season, as well as a first clean sheet.

In terms of injuries, Seamus Coleman and Dele Alli remain out but are edging closer to a return, whereas Idrissa Gueye may be available for selection after getting injured in the warm up against Bournemouth.

February was a tough time to support both Merseyside clubs, with post-World Cup form deserting the two teams.

This was Sean Dyche’s second game in charge of Everton following a shock 1-0 win at Goodison Park against then runaway leaders Arsenal. Liverpool were winless in the league in 2023 before the fixture, but derby day delight would start a run of five games without defeat for Jurgen Klopp’s injury-riddled outfit.

Mohamed Salah grabbed the opener following a devastating counter attack, breaking away after an Everton corner which saw James Tarkowski hit the post with a header. Darwin Nunez broke forward with pace and squared the ball to Salah, who slotted home.

Their lead was doubled when Cody Gakpo latched onto the end of a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross to score his first Premier League goal.
