Fantasy Premier League: Four players to wildcard in FPL GW9

Mo Salah – £12.6m

There is absolutely no point in wildcarding this week if you’re not transferring Mo Salah into your FPL team. He should be the first name on the team sheet.

Erling Haaland is the only player in the game to have racked up more expected goal involvements (xGI) over the first eight gameweeks. He’s also third for expected goals (xG) and fourth for shots, and is getting just under one big chance per game.

On top of the goal threat Salah has always possessed, he is playing a much more creative role for Liverpool this season. The Egyptian has delivered 17 key passes, nine of which resulted in big chances, and registered four assists to go with his five goals scored.

Liverpool have a very nice run of fixtures from now up until mid-December, with Man City away being the only game one could categorise as very difficult.

Arsenal complete late turnaround as Liverpool slam ’embarrassing’ error

Son Heung-min – £9.5m

Only one player has scored more goals than Son Heung-min (6) this year, and yes, it is Erling Haaland (8). While the Korean’s underlying stats are very good without being the best, it’s his new position as a central striker that makes him so attractive as an FPL asset.

Tottenham are a very attacking team who look like they could score multiple goals in any game if they are firing on all cylinders. Although Son blanked against Sheffield United and Luton recently, he did score against both Arsenal and Liverpool in between those games.

It’s hard to think of many midfielders that are more essential than the 31-year-old, but it’s clear that some tough choices will need to be made, as you’ll almost certainly have to sell Haaland to afford Salah, Son and the next man on this list.

The five longest-serving players in the Premier League right now

Kieran Trippier – £6.9m

Gameweek 6 was the time to jump on Newcastle defenders before they face Sheffield United and Burnley. Kieran Trippier in particular did well in those encounters, picking up two clean sheets and four assists, before he grabbed another assist the following week against West Ham.

But it doesn’t feel like the time has passed to get the right-back in your team, even if his price has risen quite a bit since then. He leads the entire Premier League in chances created (27), more than the likes of James Maddison (25) and Bruno Fernandes (22).

Trippier has also created six big chances and laid on five assists. He’s in great form at the minute, and he has an injury-stricken Crystal Palace at St James’ Park up next, followed by Wolves away, Arsenal at home and Bournemouth on the road.

Matty Cash – £5m

Aston Villa players should be in your wildcard this week as they have a really good run of fixtures after the international break, and Matty Cash should be at the top of that list.

No other defender comes even close to xGI of 4.0, a huge number just eight games into the season. He also leads defenders in shots, shots in the box, goals and xG. His creativity is not as high as one might hope, but his goal threat is exceptional.

It may also worth considering Moussa Diaby (£6.7) and Ollie Watkins (£8.2m). Villa have scored the third-most goals in the Premier League so far this term.
