Five of the best – Eden Hazard goals

Eden Hazard has announced his retirement from football, bringing the curtain down on a career that saw the brilliant Belgian dazzle at his best.

Recent seasons have been unkind to Hazard, who struggled to live up to expectations as injuries decimated his time at Real Madrid and brought a premature end to his career.

Hazard, however, is a player who thrilled at his very best, first emerging a Lille before spending seven successful seasons at Chelsea. Arguably the most watchable player in the Premier League during his peak seasons in west London, he was explosive, electric and efficient around goal.

In celebration of Hazard’s career, we’ve remembered some of his best goals.

Five of the best – Eden Hazard goals:

Lille vs Genoa

Hazard became the finest footballer in France during his time at Lille, earning the Ligue 1
Player of the Year award in consecutive campaigns in 2010/11 and 2011/12.

It was moments like this Europa League effort against Genoa which saw him arrive on the big stage, with the sight of defenders being left in his wake becoming familiar one.

Marseille vs Lille

Hazard’s game was built on a low centre of gravity and explosive acceleration, with the winger boasting an innate ability to weave through defensive gaps. He was, however, capable of the spectacular on occasion including this thunderous strike at Marseille.

It was a rocket which flew into the top corner to leave Steve Mandanda with no chance and a crucial goal in France’s title race. Hazard opened the scoring at The Stade Vélodrome, as Lille went on to beat their closest rivals in stoppage time. The Ligue 1 title was eventually secured by an eight-point margin.

Chelsea v Arsenal

Another sensational solo effort, in a fiercely contested clash between the London rivals.

Important – check.

Aesthetic – check.

Unforgettable – check.

This was vintage Hazard.

Liverpool vs Chelsea

Hazard came off the bench as Chelsea came from behind to beat Liverpool in the Carabao Cup in 2018/19, scoring a special late winner at Anfield.

Collecting the ball centrally, he skipped past challenges from Jordan Henderson and Fabinho before rolling a pass through the legs of Roberto Firmino to find Cesar Azpilicueta.

Demanding the return, he accelerated beyond Naby Keita down the right flank, nutmegged Alberto Moreno, before flashing a finish past Simon Mignolet from a narrow angle to book Chelsea’s place in the next round.

Incredible.

Chelsea v West Ham

The balance, the footwork, the silky smooth changes of direction, has there ever been a more Eden Hazard goal than this?

He waltzed through West Ham to score one of the goals of the season, in what proved to be the final campaign of his Premier League career.
