Jeremie Frimpong has signed a new long-term contract with Bayer Leverkusen despite reported interest in the defender from Manchester United and Real Madrid.
Frimpong has been named as a transfer target for both clubs after his impressive development at the Bundesliga side, with the 22-year-old having scored eight goals and provided a further seven assists in 34 league appearances from wing-back for Leverkusen last season.
The Dutchman has started the new season in similar form for a Leverkusen team who top the Bundesliga table under Xabi Alonso, and Frimpong has recommitted his future to the club after signing a new contract that will run until 2028.
The new deal will increase the value of the wing-back for interested clubs and could be good news for former club Celtic, who inserted a 30% sell-on clause into the deal that took Frimpong to Germany in January 2021.
Frimpong came through the academy system at Manchester City before moving to Celtic in search of first-team football and won a Scottish domestic treble with the club in 2019/20.
Last season, he was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season after emerging as one of Europe’s most productive wing-backs.
