Ranking the teams to recover the most points from losing positions in PL history

Tottenham twice came from behind to rescue a result in a thrilling North London Derby last weekend, with Son Heung-min’s brace earning Spurs a share of the spoils at Arsenal.

Son’s double saw Spurs come from behind to claim a point and continued a strong record in recovering points from Losing Positions for the north Londoners.

Spurs have salvaged eight points from losing positions already this season, but where do the club rank among the Premier League’s all-time comeback kings?

Ranking the teams to recover the most points from losing positions in Premier League history:

5. Chelsea – 360

Chelsea have rescued 360 points from losing positions in the Premier League era, a total which ranks the west Londoners fifth on the all-time list.

The 2015/16 ‘Battle of the Bridge’ remains one of Chelsea’s most memorable modern comebacks, as the Blues came from two goals down at half-time to earn a 2-2 draw with Tottenham, ending the title hopes of their London rivals in the process.

4. Liverpool – 390

Liverpool are fourth having earned 390 points after falling behind in the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side lead the Premier League for points recovered from losing positions during the early weeks of the 2023/24 campaign, having earned nine points from such situations in just six games so far this season.

Darwin Nunez’s late double at Newcastle earned Liverpool a memorable comeback win last month, with the forward’s second goal extending the Reds’ record for the most last-minute winners in Premier League history (42).

3. Arsenal – 392

Arsenal might have been on the wrong end of a comeback against Spurs last weekend, but the Gunners rank third overall for points won from losing positions.

Few have been better than a brilliant comeback against Bournemouth last season, a fixture which saw Arsenal trail 2-0 with less than half an hour to play. Goals from Thomas Partey and Ben White levelled the game, setting the stage for Reiss Nelson to slam home a spectacular 97th minute winner at the Emirates.

2. Manchester United – 427

Manchester United forged a reputation as comeback kings during the Sir Alex Ferugson era, with opposition teams often wilting under late pressure from the Red Devils.

No comeback was more famous than the club’s 1999 UCL final triumph, as United came from behind to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 after scoring two stoppage time goals.

United have been no strangers to thrilling comebacks in the Premier League either, including an unforgettable turnaround at Tottenham during the 2001/02 season. The Red Devils trailed 3-0 at half-time at White Hart Lane before coming back to win.

1. Tottenham – 428

Tottenham have now earned more points from losing positions than any other Premier League side, following their fightback to earn a draw at Arsenal last weekend.

Spurs have taken 428 points from losing positions in the Premier League era, including eight from just six games during the opening weeks of the 2023/24 campaign.

Ange Postecoglou has installed a spirit in the side since taking charge during the summer, but will hope his side are not as generous with handing opposition teams the lead as the season progresses.

Spurs earned a club record 24 points from losing positions during the 2010/11 season, though that total fell short of the Premier League record, held by Newcastle United in 2001/02 (34).
