Eight unforgettable North London Derby moments

The North London Derby is one of the fiercest in the Premier League and Arsenal and Tottenham will renew rivalries once again this weekend.

Arsenal and Tottenham have produced some truly classic contests throughout the years, with this a derby that rarely disappointments. From stunning strikes to end-to-end goal-fests, we’ve remembered some of best North London Derby moments of the modern era.

Eight unforgettable North London Derby moments:

Gazza’s Golazo

Spurs have a proud history in the FA Cup, having lifted the competition on eight occasions. The most recent of those came in 1990/91, when Terry Venables’ side beat Arsenal in the semi-finals on route to their Wembley win.

Paul Gascogine set Spurs on their way to a North London Derby victory in the last four, blasting home this brilliant free-kick from distance.

Genius from Gazza.

Henry’ solo stunner

Thierry Henry had a habit of coasting past Premier League defenders as if they were mere cones in a training ground exercise.

Against Spurs in 2002, he scored one of his greatest Gunners goals, a scintillating solo run as Arsenal thrashed their north London neighbours at Highbury.

Accelerator on, and a series of Spurs shirts in the rear-view mirror. Va va voom.

Invincibles seal title at White Hart Lane

Arsenal’s 2003/04 campaign will never be forgotten. Arsene Wenger’s side were crowned Premier League champions in historic fashion, becoming the first side since the Preston North End team of 1888/89 – the inaugural Football League campaign – to complete a top-flight season without defeat.

Arsenal wrapped up the title with four games to spare and did so at the sweetest of venues, with a 2-2 draw at Spurs sparking celebrations from the Gunners. Just as they had done 33 years earlier, Arsenal had won the league at White Hart Lane.

A sickener for Spurs to stomach.

Arsenal edge nine-goal thriller

The two teams met at White Hart Lane once again seven months later, with Spurs determined to exact revenge on the now champions.

The result was an all-time classic, as Arsenal edged a nine-goal thriller in which the two teams abandoned all defensive responsibilities and went toe-to-toe.

Spurs led through Noureddine Naybet’s volleyed effort, but goals from Thierry Henry and Lauren turned the game around for the Gunners. From there Arsenal never relinquished the lead, despite a chaotic second half that saw Spurs push their fierce rivals all the way.

Late Lennon goal saves Spurs in classic

Another end-to-end game and arguably the best North London Derby of the Premier League era.

The spoils were shared after a pulsating 4-4 draw between the teams during the 2008/09 campaign. It was David Bentley who opened the scoring for Spurs against his former side, with this spectacular effort from range.

Arsenal bounced back, however, and looked to have done enough as the Gunners led 4-2 heading into the final minutes. But Jermaine Jenas pulled one back for Spurs to set up a grandstand finish, before Aaron Lennon stole in to score an equaliser after Luka Modric’s effort came back off the post.

Cue limbs from the Spurs supporters packed inside the Emirates.

Rose’s debut rocket

Danny Rose will have dreamed up various scenarios when learning he was to make his Premier League debut in the North London Derby.

We doubt any of those would have topped what actually occurred.

What. A. Goal.

Harry Kane’s classic goal

Harry Kane proved to be a nemesis for Arsenal in the North London Derby, with no player having ever score more goals in the fixture than the former Spurs striker.

Kane scored a record-breaking 280 goals in all competitions for Tottenham, but named this North London Derby strike against the old enemy as his favourite in a Spurs shirt.

“The one against Arsenal” Kane said on his favourite goal, scored in a 2-2 draw during the 2015/16 campaign.

“I cut in off the left-hand side and whipped it into the far corner. It was an amazing atmosphere.”

Lamela’s ludicrous rabona

Erik Lamela perhaps failed to hit the heights most expected at Tottenham, but the enigmatic Argentine was certainly capable of genius.

Not content with one outrageous Rabona goal scored against Asteras Tripolis in the Europa League, Lamela later repeated the trick with this audacious piece of skill in the North London Derby.

Rightfully, it was named as winner of the FIFA Puskas Award in 2021.
