Remembering every goalkeeper to score in the Champions League

There’s little in football that receives the reception of a goalscoring goalkeeper, when the usual last line of defence finds themselves in unfamiliar territory – and as the hero.

Lazio’s Ivan Provedel wrote his name into the record books this week as the Italian shot-stopper scored a dramatic equaliser in the club’s 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid.

Provedel headed home in the 95th minute, with literally the last action of the game, to rescue Lazio a precious point in their Champions League opener at the Stadio Olimpico.

He became just the fourth goalkeeper to score a Champions League goal and we’ve looked back at the exclusive group of players to have achieved the feat.

Remembering every goalkeeper to score in the Champions League:

Hans-Jorg Butt

Hans-Jorg Butt was no stranger to scoring goals over a career representing some of Germany’s largest clubs, with the shot-stopper a specialist penalty taker for several sides.

Butt is the only goalkeeper to have scored multiple Champions League goals, having netted in the competition for Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.

Incredibly, all three of Butt’s Champions League goals were scored against Juventus, a hat-trick of penalties which contributed to his haul of 34 career club goals in all competitions.

Sinan Bolat

Sinan Bolat became the first goalkeeper to score in the Champions League from open play, as the goalkeeper became the heroic last roll of the dice for Standard Liege in 2009.

The Belgian side were heading for bottom place in the group stage and a European exit, before Bolat wandered forward for a free kick and planted home a bullet (should that be Bolat?) header against AZ Alkmaar to rescue a point and secure Standard a place in the Europa League.

Vincent Enyeama

Vincent Enyeama scored 20 goals during his career, with the Nigerian goalkeeper another who proved proficient from the spot.

Enyeama was a regular penalty taker during his spell at Israeli side Hapoel Tel Aviv and scored in the Champions League during a 3-1 defeat to Lyon.

Enyeama is Nigeria’s second-highest capped player of all time with 101 appearances for the Super Eagles, but never scored for the national side.

Ivan Provedel

Ivan Provedel became just the fourth goalkeeper to score a Champions League goal this week, after heading home a dramatic equaliser for Lazio.

The Serie A side trailed in stoppage time to Atletico Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico, with Provedel roaming forward to make himself a nuisance in the opposition box.

After an initial set-piece had been half-cleared, Provedel remained inside the area and met Luis Alberto’s in-swinging cross to plant a header past Jan Oblak.

The goal came in the 95th minute of the contest and with the last action of the game, sparking wild scenes of celebration from the Lazio crowd.
