Saudi Pro League chief hints at future Mo Salah transfer bid

Saudi Pro League director of football Michael Emenalo has said that he would “welcome” Mo Salah after one of their clubs had a transfer bid rejected by Liverpool.

Al-Ittihad offered £100 million plus £50m in add-ons for the Egyptian one day before the UK’s transfer deadline. After the Reds knocked them back, it was reported that the Jeddah outfit were willing to offer over £200m, which would be a world record transfer fee for a player.

The transfer window in Saudi Arabia closed on Thursday with no further approaches for Salah being made. But it is expected that the Liverpool supremo will be the subject of another bid next summer.

When asked by Sky Sports News if that was on the cards, Emenalo said that the door is not closed on a potential deal in the future and that they would be “very grateful” if Salah did end up in the SPL.

“First and foremost, Salah is one of the best players on the planet. I’ve said before, privately and publicly that we welcome anybody that wants to come to the SPL. That includes Salah.

“But we have to do things in a very professional and respectful manner. That’s what we’re there for, it’s what the SPL has been refined to do – bring professionalism, respect of efficiencies, and do things in a competent way.

“If it didn’t happen, it’s not because we no longer fancy the player, or because we have a problem with Liverpool. It’s because certain things that need to align didn’t. Nobody is angry, we move on, but we close no doors and if the opportunity is there to do things and do it well, and it brings Mo Salah to the SPL, we’ll be very grateful.”

When asked if Salah had provided a reason for not wanting to join the Saudi Pro League right now, the former Chelsea and Monaco director of football responded: “I don’t think there was any reason needed. There was no explanation needed.

“You don’t know what is happening within a certain football family, whether it’s personal or with their clubs, or with individuals and their family. We can’t really know for sure.

“What we know is you put your best foot forward, try to work as hard as possible to put a convincing argument together as to why the player should join the adventure, and they make their decision. We solicit no further explanation.”
