Scoring goals is often called the hardest job in football, but this list of Premier League names have had no trouble finding the net of late.

An over-reliance on penalties for goals is a criticism we see aimed at Premier League forwards, so we’ve removed spot-kicks from this feature to find the most prolific players in the division from open play.

Ranking the Premier League players with the most non-penalty goals since the start of last season:

Martin Odegaard – 16

Martin Odegaard has come of age as the creative hub of Mikel Arteta’s team, with the captain’s armband having helped bring an extra level from the midfielder.

Odegaard has scored and created at a prolific rate since the start of last season, earning a nomination for the PFA Player of the Year award last season after 22 goal involvements during Arsenal’s title challenge.

And just like that Arsenal are back in it!

The 24-year-old has started the season in similar form this time around with two goals in four games and has 16 non-penalty goals since the start of last season. No midfielder has managed more.

Callum Wilson – 16

Callum Wilson has also scored 16 non-penalty goals since the start of last season, despite facing a fight for a first-team place at Newcastle.

The arrival of Alexander Isak has provided competition for a starting spot in Eddie Howe’s side, but Wilson has continued to demonstrate that he can be depended on when it comes to scoring goals.

He scored 11 goals across the final 12 games of last season to help Newcastle to a top-four finish and Champions League qualification, while he has struck twice during the current campaign in just 96 minutes of Premier League action.

Marcus Rashford – 17

Marcus Rashford is another who found form during the Premier League run-in last season, form which ensured Erik ten Hag’s team secured Champions League football.

Rashford ended last season with 30 goals in all competitions, the best return of his career and the first time a Manchester United player has reached that landmark in a season since 2012/13.

His performances saw Rashford win the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award at Old Trafford for the first time.

Mohamed Salah – 18

Liverpool turned down a big bid from the Saudi Pro League for Mohamed Salah during the closing stages of the transfer window, with the Egyptian as close to a guarantee of goals as there is in the Premier League.

Salah has been Liverpool’s leading scorer in six straight seasons and reached 30 in all competitions for the third consecutive campaign in 2022/23. The 31-year-old has now scored 188 goals for the Reds since arriving from Roma, more than Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish.

Harry Kane – 25

Harry Kane may no longer be a Premier League player, but he ranks second on this list after the joint-best season of his career at Spurs in 2022/23.

Kane reached 30 goals in a Premier League season for the second time last season, just five of which came from the penalty spot. Kane’s campaign saw him break the all-time goal records for Spurs and England, while he moved up to second in the Premier League standings.

The Premier League’s record goalscorer, Alan Shearer, will be among those relieved to have seen Kane move on this summer, after the England captain signed for Bayern Munich in search of elusive silverware.

Erling Haaland – 34

No prizes for guessing who tops this list, with Erling Haaland having shattered goal records since his arrival at Manchester City last summer.

Haaland scored 36 goals in the Premier League last season, a record-breaking return in a single season, to earn the Golden Boot, PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

He’s started the current season in similar form with six goals in just four games, including a hat-trick against Fulham last time out. Haaland has now scored five Premier League hat-tricks, as many as Robin van Persie, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Andy Cole and Ian Wright among others.

The Norwegian goal-machine is averaging a Premier League match ball every 8.4 games.
