Women’s World Cup final preview and how to watch Spain vs England

Welcome to our Fifa Women’s World Cup final preview as England take on Spain in Australia on Sunday morning.

For the first time since 1966 an England football team will play in a World Cup decider as Sarina Wiegmann looks to add to the European Championship they won on home soil last summer.

Both countries are going for their first world crown in women’s football, although for Spain victory on Sunday would represent their first piece of major silverware in the female game. They have come close to minor glory in recent times, finishing runners-up in the SheBelieves Cup, Arnold Clark Cup and the Cup of Nations in the last three years.

With a new name guaranteed to be on the trophy, the 2023 final promises to be a brilliant spectacle. Here is everything you to need to know about the game.

When does the Women’s World Cup final kick off?

The Women’s World Cup final between Spain and England will kick off at 11am BST in Sydney, Australia.

What TV channel is Spain vs England on?

UK: BBC One, ITV1, STV

Ireland: RTE2

USA: FOX Sports

Form Guide

England: WWDWW

The Lionesses started the tournament slowly with a pair of uninspiring 1-0 wins over Haiti and Denmark.

Manager Sarina Wiegmann took the opportunity to change to a back three and it paid off handsomely against China, whom they defeated 6-1 to lay down a marker to all of the other challengers.

Nigeria, their opponents in the last-16, proved a tough nut to crack and took them to penalties after Lauren James saw red for a stamp on Michelle Alozie. The Chelsea forward was their star performer up until that point, but England won the shootout 4-2 without her.

A two-match suspension was handed down to James, but the European champions bested a hard-hitting Colombia side 2-1 after going a goal behind.

Australia, who ended England’s long unbeaten run earlier in the year, presented their toughest challenge to date, but Wiegmann’s women showed their superior class on the day to win 3-1.

Spain: WWWLW

Despite so much unrest in the Spanish camp over the past year, the team has been mightily impressive in the World Cup, winning all but one game and scoring 17 goals, the most of any team.

Spain opened the tournament with a strong performance against Costa Rica, winning 3-0. That was followed up with a 5-0 win over Zambia.

The freescoring side were halted by Japan in their final group game, however. The 2011 world champions won 4-0 in Wellington to top the group.

That didn’t deter the Spanish, though; they went on to destroy Switzerland 5-1 in the round of 16. The Netherlands offered a stern test in the quarters, but Spain emerged 2-1 victors after extra time.

They reached the decider by beating Sweden by the same scoreline in a rather tame encounter that burst into life in the final moments, with all three goals coming in the final ten minutes of the game.

Last Meeting

England 2-1 Spain – Euro 2022

These two nations met just over a year ago in the quarter-finals of the Uefa Women’s European Championship, with England coming out on top.

Spain actually took the lead approaching the hour mark through Esther Gonzalez. They were arguably the better side on the day, but Ella Toone grabbed an equaliser with minutes to go.

With extra time on the cards, Georgia Stanway blasted the ball from range into the Spanish net to give them a late, late lead.

Predicted Lineups

England’s likely starting XI: Earps; Greenwood, Bright, Carter; Daly, Walsh, Stanway, Bronze; Toone, Hemp, Russo.

Spain’s likely starting XI: Coll; Camona, Codina, Paredes, Batlle; Putellas, Abelleira, Bonmatí; Caldentey, Jenni, Redondo.

Who is the referee?

Tori Penso (USA).

Odds

England – 9/5

Spain – 13/8

Draw – 15/8
