Real Madrid plan De Gea deal after Courtois injury

Real Madrid are planning a move to sign David de Gea as a free agent after Thibaut Courtois sustained an ACL injury.

Courtois is set for several months on the sidelines after leaving training on a stretcher on Thursday and his absence is a major blow to the Spanish side ahead of the new season.

De Gea has now emerged as a potential replacement and remains without a club after leaving Manchester United in July.

The 32-year-old came close to signing for Real Madrid during the 2015 summer transfer window and the Spaniards have made contact about a potential move to the Bernabeu.

De Gea is viewed as an experienced and cost-efficient option to replace Courtois, with Andriy Lunin set to start the club’s La Liga opener against Athletic Bilbao this weekend.

The Times are reporting that Sevilla’s Yassine Bounou and Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili have also been considered, but De Gea’s status as a free agent has moved him to the front of the club’s list of candidates.

De Gea departed Manchester United after 12 seasons when his contract expired this summer, with Erik ten Hag keen to move in a new direction in goal. The Red Devils have since signed Cameroon international Andre Onana as De Gea’s replacement.
