Five players Manchester United could sell to raise funds

Manchester United are working on a restricted transfer budget this summer with funds limited due to the uncertain takeover situation at the club and a need to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

Erik ten Hag’s hopes of improving the squad ahead of the club’s Champions League return have been hindered to date, but the sale of unwanted assets could bring in vital funds for reinforcements.

Here are five Manchester United players who could be sold to raise transfer funds.

Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire’s future remains unclear with the defender having struggled for first-team football last season. Maguire was dropped after a difficult start to the campaign and failed to regain a regular role in the side, ending the campaign with just eight starts in the Premier League.

Ten Hag has spoken positively about Maguire in public, but the Dutchman has effectively demoted the club captain to fifth-choice centre-back. Gareth Southgate has warned Maguire that his place with England is under threat if his fortunes do not improve, increasing the prospect of an exit this summer.

The 30-year-old will need to find form and favour if he is to remain a part of the England side for next summer’s European Championship and the writing appears to be on the wall after Ten Hag conceded the centre-back ‘had a decision to make’ on his future at Old Trafford.

Several Premier League clubs have been credited with interest in Maguire, but a combination of the defender’s high wages and asking price has so far meant suitors have not made formal approaches.

Both expectations will need to reduce if Maguire is to find a new club this summer, a move that would perhaps suit all parties after a challenging couple of seasons which have seen the defender lose status and confidence.

Dean Henderson

Dean Henderson spent last season on loan at Nottingham Forest and impressed as the newly-promoted side avoided relegation.

Forest are keen to re-sign the 26-year-old on a permanent deal, but Manchester United’s uncertain goalkeeping situation has complicated a deal. David de Gea has departed as a free agent after a new contract was not agreed and United will be reluctant to sanction the sale of Henderson without a replacement being signed.

However, the Red Devils are said to be closing in on a deal to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan, potentially paving the path for Henderson to leave for a number one role.

Henderson is valued at around £20m and his sale could add vital funds to Ten Hag’s limited budget. Given he has not made a first-team appearance for the Red Devils since February 2022, it would be a welcome windfall without weakening last season’s squad.

Fred

Fred is expected to leave Manchester United this summer and has already been subject of interest from a number of clubs.

The Brazil international lost his place in the side last season following the arrivals of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen and started just 12 games in the Premier League. His current contract expires next summer and United will want to cash in on the 30-year-old before he reaches free agency.

Galatasaray have already seen an opening bid rejected, while Fulham are also keen on a deal. There is also understood to be interest from other Premier League clubs and The Saudi Pro League, with the Red Devils demanding a fee in the region of £20m.

Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay spent much of last season on the sidelines with Casemiro’s arrival from Real Madrid reducing his role in the side.

The 26-year-old is considering his options after just ten league starts in 2022/23 and is unlikely to be short of offers from Premier League rivals. Newcastle, West Ham and Brighton have all been strongly linked with the Scotland international, who reportedly has a price-tag in excess of £30m.

West Ham could accelerate interest in the midfielder with Declan Rice having agreed a deal to join Arsenal. McTominay’s industry and imposing frame make him an ideal stylistic replacement for the England midfielder following his £105m move to the Emirates.

Donny van de Beek

It’s fair to say it hasn’t worked out for Donny van de Beek at Manchester United.

Scratch that. It’s been a nightmare.

The midfielder arrived with a growing reputation from Ajax after scoring 41 goals in 175 games for the Dutch side, where he had impressed under the management of Erik ten Hag as the club reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2018/19.

He made just four league starts during a difficult debut season and his fortune have failed to improve since. Neither a loan spell at Everton or the arrival of Ten Hag at Manchester United reignited his career and all roads appear to lead to an exit.

Van de Beek is expected to receive interest from numerous clubs, who will consider the 26-year-old a potential bargain while his stock is low. United will fail to recoup anything near their £35m investment, but the Dutchman’s departure could add a welcome boost to their transfer fund.
