Fantasy Premier League is back for another season and as the Premier League’s opening weekend approaches next month, managers will be seeking to build the perfect squad for gameweek one.

Finding value is key to building a successful side in FPL and ahead of the new season we’ve picked out six players who could prove astute additions to your side.

Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United (£8.5m)

Bruno Fernandes’ price-tag has been a major talking point after the game’s launch this week, with the Manchester United midfielder priced at a modest £8.5m.

Fernandes has dropped £1.5m in price despite improving his points total from the previous season, a surprise price point that is sure to have FPL managers scrambling to get the Portuguese playmaker in their squad.

Fernandes scored a respectable eight goals and provided eight assists last season, but it is the underlying numbers that will make the midfielder so appealing in FPL.

Last season the 28-year-old led the Premier League for shot-creating actions (219), key passes (119), big chances created (32), through balls (23), xA (16.7), and chances created in a single game (9), while no player hit the woodwork on more occasions (5).

Add in his status as penalty taker and the expected signing of a centre-forward to convert the chances created this season and the appeal is obvious.

Son Heung-min – Tottenham (£9m)

Son Heung-min has had the joint-biggest price decrease from last season, dropping from £12m premium player to a more mid-range price point (£9m)

Son’s decrease comes after a modest return by his standards last season, with the South Korean scoring ten goals and providing six assists, almost halving his attacking returns from his 2021/22 Golden Boot winning campaign.

The forward’s struggles came as Spurs endured a disappointing campaign, but Son could emerge as a must-have if he rekindles his finest form. The arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager will lead to a more front-footed attacking approach, while Son could spend time in a centre-forward position if Harry Kane departs this summer.

James Maddison’s arrival from Leicester also adds a reliable chance creator to Spurs’ ranks, improving the prospect of Son finding his goalscoring groove once again. One to watch in the season’s opening weeks.

Christopher Nkunku – Chelsea (£7.5m)

Chelsea’s search for goals has landed at the feet of Christopher Nkunku, who has signed for the west Londoners in a £52m deal.

Nkunku arrives with a fine reputation from RB Leipzig, where he scored 58 goals in all competitions across the last two seasons. The Frenchman was named as the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season in 2021/22, before earning a share of the division’s Golden Boot accolade last season despite making just 20 league starts.

Nkunku averaged a league goal every 119 minutes last season, the sort of productivity Mauricio Pochettino will look to build his side around. Add in 17 league assists across the last two campaigns and Nkunku’s threat is clear. His arrival could be the catalyst for improvement from a Chelsea team who scored just 38 league goals last season. At £7.5m, he is an attractive option to pair with a premium centre-forward.

Evan Ferguson – Brighton (£6m)

Evan Ferguson was one of the breakthrough stars of the Premier League campaign in 2022/23, with the Irish teenager impressing at Brighton.

Ferguson’s impact has led to a price increase this season, but at £6m will tempt FPL managers given his prolific goal return and the prospect of regular football in Roberto De Zerbi’s attacking Seagulls side.

No teenager scored more goals than Ferguson (6) in the Premier League last season, despite the 18-year-old making just ten starts. His return of 0.57 non-penalty goals per 90 was third among u-21 players in Europe’s top five leagues, with Ferguson averaging a goal every 158 minutes during his debut campaign.

Expect his minutes and goal return to increase in 2023/24, while Brighton’s appealing start to the season will make him a popular pick.

Bukayo Saka – Arsenal (£8.5m)

Bukayo Saka’s brilliant season has not led to the price hike some expected, with the Arsenal winger priced at a more-than-reasonable £8.5m.

Saka was one of just two players in the Premier League to return 10+ goals and 10+ assists, but while FPL favourite Mohamed Salah is valued at £12.5m, Saka has a more modest price-tag.

The 21-year-old’s end product continues to improve and he ended the campaign with a first senior hat-trick during England’s 7-0 thrashing of North Macedonia last month. The fourth-highest scoring midfielder last season, he has the potential to improve on that return and once again break the 200-point barrier.

Team-mates Martin Odegaard (£8.5m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£8m) are similar prices and will make a decision on which Arsenal midfielder to select difficult.

Sven Botman – Newcastle (£4.5m)

Sven Botman was one of the signings of the season last term with the Dutch defender excellent as Newcastle secured a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

Eddie Howe’s side held the joint-best defensive record in the Premier League and their solidity saw each of the club’s first-choice back four – Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Botman and Dan Burn – rank among the nine highest scoring FPL defenders.

Botman’s price tag has surprisingly remained at £4.5m, making him an ideal option to add to your defence. Newcastle’s fixture list is difficult to start the season, but the Magpies have consistently shown that they’re one of the toughest teams in the league to beat.
