Remembering how every Premier League club did in European competition in 22/23

After another season reached its conclusion we’ve decided to look back and reflect on how Premier League clubs fared in Europe this season.

For some, it was a memorable campaign in continental competition, while others will have been disappointed with their performance in Europe after expectant beginnings.

Remembering how every Premier League club did in European competition in 2022/23.

Arsenal – Europa League (Round of 16)

Arsenal began the season among the favourites for success in the Europa League, a stance that was strengthened following an outstanding start to the Premier League season under Mikel Arteta.

Despite rotation during the group stage, Arsenal progressed as group winners. The Gunners won five of their six fixtures, with a 2-0 defeat at PSV Eindhoven the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record.

Arsenal were drawn to face Sporting Lisbon in the Round of 16 and exited the competition on penalties after a 3-3 draw on aggregate over two legs. Pedro Goncalves’ outrageous long-range goal – scored from 46 yards – forced extra time at the Emirates in the second leg and it was Sporting who prevailed on penalties.

Defeat was a disappointment for Arsenal despite their main focus of a title challenge, while injuries to defensive duo William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu were a damaging blow to the club’s Premier League hopes as the Gunners faltered during the run-in.

Chelsea – Champions League (Quarter-finals)

Chelsea reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League after recovering from a difficult start that saw the west Londoners take just one point from their opening two group games.

Four straight wins saw Chelsea progress as group winners ahead of AC Milan, to set up a last-16 clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Karim Adeyemi’s winner secured the Bundesliga side a first-leg advantage at the Westfalenstadion, but goals from Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz saw Chelsea overturn that deficit in the return to reach the last eight.

Chelsea faced Real Madrid in the quarter-finals for the third consecutive campaign, but suffered a comprehensive defeat over two legs to the holders.

Karim Benzema and Marcos Asensio put Real Madrid in control of the tie in the first leg after Ben Chilwell was sent off for Chelsea, before Rodygo’s brace ended hopes of a comeback in the return at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea – who will not feature in Europe next season after a 12th place finish in the Premier League – bowed out 4-0 on aggregate.

Liverpool – Champions League (Round of 16)

Liverpool began the season having reached three of the previous five Champions League finals, but were eliminated in the last 16 in 2022/23.

Jurgen Klopp’s side began the season in disastrous fashion with a 4-1 defeat at Napoli, but recovered to win five consecutive group games and progress as runners-up to the Italians in Group A. Their group stage campaign included a memorable 7-1 win at Rangers, a fixture that saw Mohamed Salah score the fastest ever Champions League hat-trick at Ibrox.

Liverpool met Real Madrid in the last 16, a rematch of the previous season’s final. The first leg looked to be heading towards a memorable European night at Anfield as goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah put the Reds 2-0 ahead inside 14 minutes, but Real Madrid recovered to turn the game around.

Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema each scored twice in a 5-2 win, as the Spaniards became the first away side to score five goals at Anfield in Europe. Benzema scored again with the only goal of the game as Real won the return to progress 6-2 on aggregate.

Manchester City – Champions League (Winners)

Manchester City are celebrating after winning the Champions League for the first time, with the club’s long wait for European success ended after a historic 2022/23 campaign.

City have become just the seventh team to win the competition as part of a treble in the Champions League era and just the second English team to have won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season.

Pep Guardiola’s side were a cut above the rest of Europe in a stunning season, one which saw famous names ruthlessly put to the sword. In the knockout round games at the Etihad, City racked up a combined score of 14-1 against RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

The final proved a more cagey affair, but Rodri’s goal secured a 1-0 win over Inter Milan in Istanbul to crown Manchester City champions of Europe for the first time. It was a sweet moment for Guardiola after a 12-year wait for his third Champions League title, while the Spaniard became the first manager in history to win continental trebles with two different clubs.

History made.

Manchester United – Europa League (Quarter-finals)

Manchester United reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, before defeat to eventual winners Sevilla in the last eight.

Erik ten Hag’s team faced FOUR Spanish teams during their run in the competition, having first finished as runners-up to Real Sociedad in the group stage. Their reward was a blockbuster Round of 32 tie with Barcelona and United progressed 4-3 on aggregate after an entertaining two-legged tie.

United then eased past Real Betis 5-1 on aggregate in the last-16, with a comfortable first-leg win at Old Trafford setting the foundation for progress.

The Red Devils capitulated in the next round however, after blowing a two-goal lead against Sevilla. Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire both scored own goals in the final six minutes as the first meeting ended in a 2-2 draw, before a dreadful performance in the return saw Ten Hag’s team thrashed 3-0 in Seville.

Tottenham – Champions League (Round of 16)

Tottenham’s return to the Champions League ended in the Round of 16.

The north Londoners progressed from a competitive group that saw all four teams in contention to qualify heading into the final fixtures.

Spurs were heading out of the competition after trailing Marseille at half-time on matchday six, but goals from Clement Lenglet and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg turned the game around and sent the Premier League side through.

Spurs suffered a tame exit in the first knockout round however, exiting the competition to AC Milan after failing to score against the Rossoneri over two legs. Brahim Diaz’s early goal in the first leg was enough to send the Italians into the last eight.

West Ham – Europa Conference League (Winners)

The Europa Conference League had its sceptics after being formed ahead of last season, but the competition has proven to be a refreshing new route into continental competition for several clubs.

Roma secured a first-ever European trophy after winning the inaugural competition last season and West Ham are now celebrating a first major trophy in more than four decades.

David Moyes’ side eased into the semi-finals after a flawless group stage campaign and comfortable wins over AEK Larnaca and Gent, before a tough test as AZ Alkmaar were beaten in the last four.

West Ham faced Fiorentina in the final and goals from Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen – the latter’s winner scored in the last minute – secured a 2-1 win and silverware success in Prague.

The Hammers have soaked in the celebrations of a victory parade, having won a first major trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 1980. It is the first major honour of Moyes’ managerial career, while victory has secured West Ham a place in next season’s Europa League.
