Premier League Team of the Week – Matchday 36

Each week we delve through the Premier League’s weekend action and compile our divisional Team of the Week from the fixtures’ finest performances.

Manchester City moved to within a win of the title as they beat Everton 3-0 while Arsenal suffered a defeat to Brighton by the same scoreline at the Emirates. Manchester United bagged three points to move closer to securing Champions League qualification, while Spurs slipped up once again to an in-form Aston Villa.

Southampton finally slipped through the Premier League trap door with defeat at home to Fulham, while Leeds and Nottingham Forest earned themselves a point in their respective battles to beat the drop.

Here is The Football Faithful’s Premier League Team of the Week.

Goalkeeper – Jason Steele

The 32-year-old shot-stopper made a couple of decent saves during Brighton’s brilliant 3-0 win away at Arsenal, although it was his ability on the ball that really caught the eye.

Steele showed calmness and precision throughout as he put on a kicking clinic that Man City ‘keeper Ederson would have been proud of.

Despite playing a host of ambitious long passes to set Brighton on the counter, Steele still managed to record a whopping 88% pass completion rate.

Right-Back – Moises Caicedo

Is there nothing this 21-year-old Ecuadorian can’t do?

Having already proven himself to be one of the most sought-after defensive midfielders in the Premier League, Caicedo has spent the last few weeks showing us that he is also a top-class right-back.

Caicedo literally took Gabriel Martinelli out of the game as retaliation for the Brazilian nearly decapitating his teammate Kaoru Mitoma, before putting in a flawless defensive display throughout.

Showed all the physical and technical qualities that have made him so sought after.

Centre-Back – Rasmus Kristensen

Put his body on the line throughout as Leeds secured a battling 2-2 draw against top-four chasing Newcastle at Elland Road.

Topped off a man-of-the-match display when his deflected shot from the edge of the area handed Leeds a crucial point in their battle to beat the drop.

Centre-Back – Levi Colwill

The 20-year-old Chelsea loanee handled the always lively Gabriel Jesus brilliantly, showing he has the attributes required to not just survive but to thrive at the top level.

Colwill’s range, pace, and passing accuracy were superb as he and the rest of Brighton’s backline led Arsenal’s press on a merry dance around the Emirates.

One of Chelsea’s first orders of business this summer should be integrating the impressive young centre-back into their first-team squad.

Left-Back Pervis Estupinan

Another Ecuadorian defender and another wonderful piece of transfer business by Brighton.

The 25-year-old did what few have managed this season by keeping Arsenal dangerman Bukayo Saka quiet, and showed his quality and remarkable engine down the left for the entire 90+ minutes.

After bagging an assist for Julio Enciso’s opener nothing summed up Estupinan’s indefatigable display better than when he fired home a rebounded shot from Deniz Undev in injury time.

What a player. What a team. What a club.

Midfield – IIkay Gundogan

Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne so often get the plaudits for Manchester City, but Gundogan is a truly world-class operator who so often comes up with the goods at crucial times for his side.

City were finding Everton a tough nut to crack before Gundogan opened the scoring with a ridiculous improvised finish.

The Germany international then put a cross on Haaland’s head a couple of minutes later before he put the icing on the cake with a delightful clipped free kick from the edge of the area. A truly sensational display of attacking midfield play.

Midfield – Douglas Luis

The Brazilian midfielder bossed the centre of the park with a 94% pass success rate before curling home a quality free-kick to seal a sixth successive home win at Villa Park.

Rumour has it that Aston Villa’s ambitious owners will back Unai Emery massively in the transfer market this summer, although defensive midfield is certainly one position they don’t need strengthening in.

Midfield – Eberechi Eze

Eze has found his mojo again in a central role behind the Eagles’ front three as Roy Hodgson’s free-scoring Crystal Palace side continues to impress.

The ridiculously talented 24-year-old’s second goal in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth was pure footballing porn.

Forward – Raheem Sterling

The 28-year-old England international may well be regretting that he pushed for a move from Man City to the absolute sh*tshow that is Chelsea Football Club last summer, but he did at least remind everyone of his class with a well-taken brace in the 2-2 home draw with Nottingham Forest.

We suspect Sterling is one of the players that new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino will feel he can get a much better tune out of next season.

Forward – Taiwo Awoniyi

Awoniyi has struggled for form and fitness this season after his £17 million move from Union Berlin.

Up until last week, the striker had bagged just four goals in 23 Premier League appearances for Forest, but it looks like the Nigerian hitman has located his goalscoring boots at just the right time for Steve Cooper’s side. After notching a brace in the crucial 4-3 win over Southampton, the 25-year-old followed that up with an equally vital couple of headers during his sides’ 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

That’s 50% of his Premier League goals in the last two games. Timing is everything and all that.

Forward – Callum Wilson

Newcastle frontman Wilson has well and truly recovered from his mid-season slump and his expertly taken brace of penalties secured an important point for Newcastle away at Leeds, a game Eddie Howe’s side could have easily lost.

That’s now 17 Premier League goals for the season for Wilson, and nine out of nine from the spot for Newcastle. Clinical.
